DONAGHADEE

Is a beautifully-situated seaside resort in County Down, 14 and 22 miles by rail from Belfast, 8 and 6 miles from Newtownards by the road, and 40 to 60 minutes' journey from Belfast by train, situated on the shore of the Irish Channel. It is the nearest port to Scotland, being 21 miles from Portpatrick and Portlogan, the passage to which places can be made by steam vessels in one hour and a half. There is a beautiful and most substantial harbour and lighthouse built by the Government for the accommodation of steam packets. Donaghadee possesses all the advantages connected with a first-class bathing place, having a fine beach, good lodging houses, baths and other requisites, for the comfort and convenience of visitors, with a railway from Belfast, Downpatrick, and Ballynahinch, and is greatly frequented during the summer months. Golf Course (18 hole) in the commodious Club-house, and Tennis Court. The town faces the sea, and delightful walks can be enjoyed along the shore, and the walks and grounds of Mr. G. L. De La Cherios, J.P., are a favourite retreat.  At the northern end of the town is a Danish rath - a mound of considerable height, and surmounted by a tower and fortress in miniature, from the summit of which a beautiful prospect of the town and surrounding country, with a distant view of the Scotch coast and Copeland Isles, is commanded.  The Population in 1911, was 2,213.  The summer population is about 4,000 to 6,000. The town adopted the Towns Improvement (Ireland) Act in 1904, and urban sanitary powers were granted at 1st January, 1906, and under the Council's administrative powers the town is making progress in every direction, and a good water supply and sewerage scheme has been provided.  The shops' half-holiday is (on Thursday)

DONEMANA

This is a thriving and healthy village, situate on the River Dennet, about nine miles from Londonderry, and six from Strabane. It was founded by Sir John Drummond in 1619, and he built a bawn of 109 feet square near the town. This bawn was removed and a castle built on the site by Sir John Burgoyne. It is now in ruins. On the opposite side of the road is the rectory, above which is an extensive wood called the "Glastry" or "Cloister" wood, and nestling under this is the beautiful new Parish Church, built in 1879, at a cost of over £3,000. Both externally and internally it is one of the handsomest churches in the Diocese. Fairs are held on the last Thursday of every month.

DOWNPATRICK

An important centre from the earliest times, Downpatrick is the principal and assize town of the County of Down. It occupies a picturesque position eighteen Irish miles south-east from Belfast, and is connected with that city by the County Down Railway. The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, built on the site of an ancient abbey, stands on a wooded eminence to the west of the town, and objects of interest in the vicinity are the reputed grave of St. Patrick, and the old Town Cross, which was restored in 1897. The Free Library, in Church Street, was erected in 1908 by a grant of £2,000 from Andrew Carnegie. It was endowed by the trustees of the late Miss Elizabeth Saul, the last survivor of an old Down family, and is supported by the Town Commissioners with a 1d rate under the Libraries Acts. The Assembly Hall was built in 1883 at the expense of the first Lord Dunleath. Opposite the Courthouse are the almshouses and schools endowed by Mr. Southwell early in the eighteenth century. The Down Hunt Clubrooms are in the town, and the steeplechase course half a mile distant. The Masonic Hall is one of the finest buildings of the kind in Ireland. Fairs - First Tuesday in each month. Markets - Tuesday and Saturday. Half-holiday, Thursday.  Population, 3,199

DRAPERSTOWN

Is a post town in the Parish of Ballynascreen, Barony of Loughanshollin, and Parliamentary Division of South Derry, situated at the intersection of two main roads, one of which leads from Magherafelt, and runs through into North Derry, and the other from Maghera to Omagh and other towns in Tyrone.  There are various other places of interest in the neighbourhood, which by their traditions and varied scenery tend to give a peculiar charm to the town and district.  About three miles distant from the town, on the Omagh road, are the ruins of the old Church of Ballynascreen, which, according to local tradition, was founded by St. Patrick.  The market day is Wednesday of each week, for pork, butter, fowl, straw, hay, and other farm produce.  A horse and cattle fair is held on the first Friday of each month.  The population of the town, which is the general market and fair for a large part of Mid-Tyrone and a part of East Tyrone, at the last census was 502.

DROMARA

Formerly styled Annsborough, in compliment to a member of the Downshire family, is a neat village, situate on the western bank of the River Lagan, and about three miles distant from the base of Slieve Croob, whence the river takes its rise. Dromara, which is distant from Belfast about sixteen Irish miles, and on the leading road from that city to Rathfriland, contains about fifty-three houses. In the vicinity of the town is a factory for handling flax on a new principle, and turning out the fibre to compete with the Belgian article.  The markets in Dromara are now held on Tuesdays, and the fairs, which are generally well attended, are held on the first Friday in the months of February, May, August, and November; also on the first Friday after the 15th day of the months of March, June, September, and December. Petty Sessions are held on the third Monday of each month. DROMORE

A market town in the County Down, fourteen miles distant from Belfast, seated on the River Lagan, and on the road from Belfast to Dublin.  The town, which has improved much, and is gradually growing, contains within its boundaries seven factories, giving employment to a large number of hands; and one flax and two corn mills.  Electric light has been installed, and the town is now one of the best lighted in Ireland. Fairs are held monthly, on the second Saturday in the months of January, February, March, April, June, July, September and November.  The old fairs of 12th May and 10th October are held as usual, and also the second Saturday previous to Christmas. There is a market held on Saturday and Wednesday in each week, the latter day being principally for oats, grass-seed, and fowl. There is also a well attended flax market on each alternate Tuesday. DRUMQUIN

Drumquin is situated in the parish of Longfield, barony of West Omagh, County Tyrone. It lies about nine miles west of Omagh, five miles south of Baronscourt, and is nearly enclosed on all sides by hills. The town is mentioned in Irish history so early as the 13th century. Towards the end of 1211 there was a rising of the Irish under Hugh O'Neill and a chieftain named O'Hegney, when Drumquin was burned. Not far from the village are the ruins of "Kirlish Castle," a memorial of the Plantation under James I., built by Sir John Davis, Attorney-General, about 1610, in fulfilment of conditions of a grant of 2,000 acres.  The population in 1911 was 200.  The village has a weekly market on Thursdays for butter, eggs, poultry, and other farm produce, and a monthly fair on the last Thursday in each month, which is well known over the North-West

DUNDRUM

A flourishing seaport town in the County of Down, about twenty-two miles from Belfast, seven from Downpatrick, and three from Newcastle.  It is situated on the shore of the inner Bay of Dundrum.  The Downshire family has done much towards improving the town.  On an eminence above the town are the ruins of the old castle, supposed to have been built by Sir John De Courcy.  There has been erected by Georgiana, the late Marchioness of Downshire a fine church, St. Donard, as a memorial to her husband, the late Marquis. The Parish Church (Kilmegan) being a mile distant.  A coal, general cargo, and passenger steamer plies twice a week to English and Scotch ports, associated with a number of other coasting steamers. An extensive import trade exists in coal, timber, slates, cement, and patent manures.  Exports consist of granite setts, native timber, grain, and potatoes. A market is held on Saturdays for eggs and fowl, and a monthly cattle fair is held on the third Tuesday of each month.  Ballykinlar Camp, for training troops for H.M. Army, is distant two miles from Dundrum across the inner bay, or four miles by road.

DUNGANNON, DONAGHMORE AND COALISLAND

Dungannon is a municipal borough, market, and post town in County Tyrone, thirty-two miles W. by S. from Belfast. It is situated on a beautiful hill, from which, on a clear day, may be seen with ease the fairest portion of Ulster.  t was the seat of the O'Neill's from its earliest days; and on a hill crowning the town formerly stood a castle erected by those powerful chiefs. The lord of the soil is the Right Honourable the Earl of Ranfurly, G.C.M.G. The market, which is now the property of the Urban Council, is held each Thursday.  One of the best grass-seed markets in the North of Ireland is held every Tuesday in the season. The pork market is one of the largest in Ulster. A flax market has been opened, and is held twice weekly during the season. The shops' half-holiday is on Wednesday. The population at the census in 1911 was 3,830.

Donaghmore, two miles distant, has an ancient ecclesiastical history, St. Patrick having built a church where the old graveyard now stands, close to which, on the village street, is a fine specimen of the old Irish cross. Governor Walker was rector of this parish at the time the Protestants were driven into Derry. His remains are interred in the Parish Church, Castlecaulfield. Wolfe, the author of the ode on the "Burial of Sir John Moore," was curate of this parish. The soap and candle making industries, carried on by Messrs. D. Brown & Son Ltd., are the largest of the kind in Ireland, and give employment to very many people. The population in 1911 was 183.

Coalisland, which is situated three miles from Dungannon, and two from Stewartstown, is a place of some importance; an extensive weaving factory, a large spinning mill, flour and corn mills, and a pottery and spade manufactory are carried on near and in it, and the Ulster Canal runs through it. The local coalfields are in process of development by Sir Samuel Kelly, Belfast, and it is expected that in the near future Coalisland will have a large increase both in population and trade. A weekly market is held every Tuesday for agricultural and dairy produce, and on Friday for grain.  Population 936.

DUNGIVEN

Originally called Duneevan, derives its name from Dune, a fort, is situated close to the banks of the River Roe.  On a jutting rock overhanging the river, at a place known as the "Salmon Leap," stands the old Church or Priory, founded by Dermot O'Cahan in 1,100.  Within its roofless walls is the grave of the illustrious Chieftain O'Cahan (Cooey na gall O'Cahan) and his seven sons. A weekly market for the sale of grain, potatoes, pork, butter, and eggs is held every Saturday.  A fair is held monthly, on the second Tuesday. Valuable beds of limestone and freestone are found in the district, which contains the famous Altmover quarries of freestone.  The shops' half-holiday is on Thursday.  The population of the town, which contains three places of worship, was 655 at the last census.
