North Down Borough Council Memorandum
To: Mrs. E. Gordon from Mr. R. Russell Date: 11th February 1986
Review of 1936 Co. Down Trophy Race
Motor Rally held at Easter (1936)
proved once again a popular attraction which induced many visitors to
make Bangor their headquarters during the East Holidays. The Co. Down
Trophy race had Bangor as its starting and finishing point. This
international tourney attracted keen competition by many drivers and
provided spectacular duel for supremacy. The holding of a similar race
during the coming season is having the Councils careful consideration
but it is not at all certain the race will be held, the lamentable
tragedy at the
Ards T.T. Race having been rather a dampen on motor racing through
crowded thoroughfares. The view of the public is that no event of the
kind should be held unless adequate steps can be taken to ensure the
safety of the spectators watching the race. Meantime the Bangor
authorities have adopted the very wise precaution of asking the local
police for their opinion in the matter. The Concours d'Elegance proved
once again a real beauty parade of fine motor cars and brought together
at queens Parade an assemblage of cars representing scores of thousands
of pounds. Jan. 25th 1936
Precis - Alderman Gary proposed, Councillor Millar seconded, Councillor
Milligan moved motion. There should be an instruction from the Town
Clerk to ascertain from 1,000 ratepayers their views as to whether a
race should be held or not. This by circular letter to 500 ratepayers
resident on the course equally divided over the route (Belfast Road,
Abbey Street, Briansburn Road, etc.) 500 to be distributed on basis of
100 each to ratepayers resident in each Ward every 10th name on register
to be taken. Total cost less than £4.00.
Milligan concerned over the promotion of speed rather than moderation,
Speed being an incentive to the young bloods of the town.
C. Milligan personally favoured an open country race, but ballot would
be a fair test. Concerned over closing of Main Road and effect on
traders, only pubs and tobacconists benefitting. Concern (C. Logan) that
only 1000 out of population of 16000 be balloted.
Lively debate followed mainly personality clashes.
The report was carried by 10 votes to 2.
February 22nd 1936. The Motor Rally - The Minister
for Home Affairs wrote approving the spending by the Council of a sum
not exceeding £50 as first prize in connection with the annual Motor
Rally to finish at Bangor and also a sum not exceeding £50 as a
guarantee to the joint committee which would be responsible for running
the Co. Down Trophy Road Race on Saturday 20th June.

June 6th 1936. Bangor Car Race Entries.
Precis.
Representative entry of 31: Grand Stand to be Built.
The first list of entries for the Co. Down Trophy car race to be run on
the Bangor circuit on June 20th makes interesting reading. For the first
time an E.R.A. car will take part in the contest. A car of that type has
been entered by P.N. Whitehead of Cambridge.
The entry is fairly representative with the total being an improvement
and it is possible there will be a few late entries from England.
It is pleasing to note that those who did so well
last year are to take part again.
Last years winner Mr. M. Fleming of Belfast has entered his 847 cc M.G.
Midget.
F. H. Ffrench David (Dublin) who was second will
race in his 995cc Ballila Fiat.
Flt.-Lieut. L. S. Briggs (Whiteabbey) who was fourth will drive a fast
K3 type (1087cc) supercharges M.G. Magnette. (Earlier in the season he
raced at Cork and I.O.M. without luck).
W. Sullivan (3rd in 1935) of Bangor has entered his 849 cc supercharged
Sullivan Special. An interesting entry was the 99s cc Ford by the
Smithfield Motor Co. of Dublin (It had being doing well that season in
the Republic being fourth at Cork).
Other noteable entries.
Super charged Squire entered by the Duke of Grafton (set lap record in
1935 82.87 m.p.h. then driven by Luis Fontes, this car finished 2nd at
Cork, 1936) 2.3 Alpha Romeo by A. Powys Lybbe.
New eight cylinder 1½ litre supercharged Bugatti by Princess Nina
Mdivina.
10 M.G.'s entered plus six Bugattis.
The Grandstand will be situated (by public demand) opposite the Pits at
Bangor Railway Station accommodating approximately 300 people. Adjoining
the stand will be two unseated enclosures. A further enclosure will be
sited at Queens Parade. The stand and enclosure will have a P.A.
system. June 13rd (13th or
3rd?)
Final closing of entries at 36. Half entrants from Britain and the
continent. Speeds expected to be higher than anything previously
seen.
Four of the late entries are out and out racing cars.
A Supercharged E.R.A. to be driven by G. F. A. Manby-Colegrave. Three of
the latest supercharged Austin racing models, drivers being C. L.
Goodacre, C. J. P. Dodson and L. P. Drisedl, cars entered by Sir Herbert
Austin.
Another cross channel entrant is J. P. Almack driving a Brookland Riley
and the sixth is J. Liddel (Belfast) in a 847 cc M.C.
The E.R.A.'s and the supercharged Alpha Romeo are expected to approach
Clandeboye Corner at speeds of 130 m.p.h.
The Prime Minister Viscount Craigavon has signified his intention of
being present.
The stewards will be Viscount Castlereagh, Rt. Hon. J. Milne Barbour,
Capt. A. W. Phillips of the R.A.C. London. The Mayor of Bangor (Cncllr.
Walter Malcolm) and Mr. F. H. Rogers.
Further attractive awards have been added to the list a silver cup
presented by Mr. William Noble for the driver completing the course at
the highest speed and a silver cup presented by Mr. F. H. Rogers for the
fastest lap.
All drivers completing the course will be presented (by M. F. H. Hayn)
with silver ash trays bearing the Club crest (Ulster Automobile Assoc.)
Cash prizes totalling more than £200 provided by residents and traders

This entry list promises an afternoon of thrills and interest in the
event is increasing daily.
The Committee issued an appeal to Residents and Traders to support the
event by contributing to prize fund in order to secure the event in
Bangor, in competition for other resorts which were keep to have the
race. Residents could sub-let their Gardens or windows and send the
amount raised to the fund.
Lack of support would result in the committee not tendering for the race
the following year therebye (thereby) the race would be alloted to one
of the towns keen on securing it.
The complete list of subscriptions would be published in the Spectator.
June 20th 1936
While the race is to be run on a handicap basis allowances to the slower
cars will take the form of credit laps. This will permit of a massed
start of which there could be nothing more spectacular or thrilling.
The grid system of starting will be employed. Alternatively three
abreast and two abreast. The cars returning the fastest times in
practice will occupy the front row and so on down to the slowest car.
From start in Abbey Street there is a gradual rise of about one mile.
Then a level stretch and the approach to Clandeboye Corner (Fastest
point of course) right angle turn to connecting road to Crawfordsburn.
Crawfordsburn corner whilst faster than Clandeboye is more dangerous.
After a dip and climb there is another fast stretch downhill to the
bridge at Bangor West. The entrance to Grays Hill should also be the
scene of some thrills and spectacular cornering should be witnessed as
the cars swing our of Queens Parade into Main Street.
All points of the race will be in communication with the starting point
by telephone, then relayed by P.A. system.
(A leaflet giving details of arrangements and practice times were
available at the office of the Ulster Automobile Club).
Powyss-Lybbes Alpha Romeo twice won the International T.T. race at
Brooklands in three consecutive years in the I.O.M. race it finished
first second and third. The previous year it won the Limerick race.
The Practice.
Bangor Streets thronged: A. R. Finlay (M.G.) and W. T. McCalla (Sullivan
Special) collided going out of Bangor (no injuries, cars little the
worse)

wheel.

At a council meeting Councillor McMillan
complained about the noise. Going back to the ballot question it was
stated at the meeting ".... The race was held without the council
consulting the people ...."
Councillor McMillan proposed that the Town Clerk should get in touch
with the U.A.C. and the police in view to prohibiting practice except
during recognised practice hours. This was carried.
June 27th 1936 Precis. The Bangor Car
Race - County Down Trophy.
English driver wins race at record speed: Northern racer comes home
second. The story of the
third race is a record of the devastating progress through the field of
A. Powyss-Lybbe driving an Alpha Romeo.
Powyss-Lybbe was on the scratch mark and was conceding credit laps to
other cars up to a total of five (equivalent to 30 miles out of a
distance of 150 miles). He romped home a comparatively easy winner by
over three minutes from Flt-Lt Briggs on a supercharged M.G.
Though the margin is not to be taken as an easy win.
From the early stages it was apparent that if
Dodson, driving an Austin, had completed he would have been the certain
winner. Dodson had to retire during the tenth lap due to carburation or
supercharger trouble thus taking a considerable amount of interest out
of the race. The Bangor
driver Sullivan in a Fiat was also in contention but struck disaster in
the form of a burst radiator. This gave the English driver no serious
rival and he broke the lap record three times leaving it finally at 4
mins. 7 secs. eleven seconds inside the figure set by Luis Fontes the
previous year. The speed of this lap was 86.56 m.p.h.
Out of a total entry of 36 cars 31 came to the
line. (Whitehead failed to start due to gearbox trouble), of which 10
cars finished. An eleventh car crossed the line 11 seconds after the
allotted 20 minutes - after the winner - too late to qualify.
The race was started at 3.15 by the Prime Minister
and within seconds the whole field was streaming into the narrow bottle
neck of the Belfast Road.
Powyss-Lybbe took the lead with Dobson in his slipstream. At Clandeboye
corner and Crawfordsburn the cars were head to tail. At the end of the
first lap Powyss-Lybbe was in the lead 6 seconds from Dodson who in turn
led Goodacre (Austin) by 2 seconds. Even at this stage it was evident
that Powyss-Lybbe would have to pull a lot of speed out of his engine if
he was to cut down the credit lap he was conceding to the Austins.
Powyss-Lybbe and Dodson then began lapping other
competitors themselves separated by just 2 seconds but the Englishman
increased this to 6 seconds in the 5th lap.
The handicap leaders at 20 minutes were:-
1. Dodson (Austin)
2. Sullivan (Fiat)
3. Powyss-Lybbe (Alpha Romeo)
4. Ffrench - Davis (Fiat)
5. Driscoll (Austin)
6. Fleming (M.G.) with
13 cars being inside their handicap allowance Driscoll retired leaving
Dodson alone carrying the Austin banner.
The handicap leaders after 40 minutes were:-
1. Dodson
2. Powyss-Lybbe
3. Sullivan
4. McFerran (Bugatti)
5. Briggs (M.G.)
6. Ffrench Davis
Powyss-Lybbe continued to lap as if he were merely touring and after the
failure of Dodson to reappear for the eleventh lap the last hope of
Austin had gone. Baird
(M.G.) collided with a dog in Main Street and bent his steering wheel to
an extent that he was unable to continue. Seven retirements had been
announced after the race had been 50 minutes in progress.
The handicap leaders at 50 minutes were:-
1. Powyss-Lybbe
2. McFerran
3. Briggs
4. Taylor (Bugatti)
5. Conan Doyle (Bugatti)
6. Mangan (M.G.) There
were now only seven drivers ahead of Powyss-Lybbe on the road and he
proceeded to cut them down at the rate of one per lap. The actual leader
on the road as distinct from handicap, Mangar.
At 17 laps Powyss-Lybbe was fifth on the course
and at 19 laps 2nd therefore a definite first place on Handicap. His
average speed to this point was 83.34 miles per hour. Powyss-Lybbe
passed Mangar at the end of the twentieth lap.
The race ended as follows:
1. Powyss-Lybbe (2634 Alpha Romeo) 1 hour 45 mins. 36 secs. at
83.36 m.p.h.
2. Flt-Lt L. R. Briggs 1087 M.G. (21 laps) 1-49-4 75.15
m.p.h.
3. Capt. D. Taylor 2263 Bugatti (1 lap) 1-51-10 76.93.
4. C. H. Manders 995 Adler (4 laps) 1-51-43 66.98.
5. G. A. Mangar 847 M.G. (51 laps) 1-52-4 63.6.
6. A. P. McArthur 1287 M.G. (4 laps) 1-54-40 74.34.
7. A. Conan Doyle 1492 Bugatti (1 lap) 1-55-3 74.34.
8. M. Fleming 847 M.G. (5 laps) 1-55-26 61.74.
9. G. F. A. Manby - Colegrave 1488 G.R.A. (scr) 2-0-14 74.10.
10. J. McGrattan 995 Fiat (4 laps) 2-2-47 60.95.
The event was run in weather conditions bordering
on the tropical peculiar considering the previous night and early
morning had been wet, and after the race a terrific thunderstorm burst
over the area. Attendance
must have been a record and the event was not marred by even a minor
accident. Altogether the
third race for the Co. Down Trophy will go down in motor racing history
as a most successful event and one up to the highest standards
associated with this form of sport.
Happy Night at Caps.
Powyss-Lybbe received Co. Down Trophy and a
replica and £100 together with the trophy for highest average speed and
trophy for fastest lap. Fl.
Lt. Briggs replica of Trophy plus £50.
Capt. Taylor replica of Trophy plus £25
Footnote: On Monday August 3rd 1936 the 22 year
old Duke of Grafton, driving a Bugatti, was killed at the Limerick Grand
Prix after loosing (losing) control in the early stages and crashing
into a stone wall. He died in hospital! Ronnie Russell
