News Letter, Wednesday, February 3, 1965 Wilson returned to a challenge
When the Ulster Government decided there must be a detailed plan of economic
development for the Province the big problem posed was: "Who is best
qualified to do it." And, ironically, all possibles narrowed down to an
Ulsterman who had strayed from his native shores - Professor Thomas Wilson.
The job was a challenge to the outspoken professor who comes from Ballynure,
Co. Antrim, and he and his team set to work. Yesterday - more than a year
later - their 153 page report and the Government's views on it were made
public. A Natural To those who knew Professor Wilson his
appointment as economic consultant to the Ulster Government did not come as
a surprise. His past experience and qualifications made him a natural.
After a sparkling academic career at Methodist College, Belfast, and Queen's
University, he went on to Cambridge. Served In the
war years he was a member of Sir Winston Churchill's statistical department.
Later he became a lecturer in the department of economics at Oxford
University. Experience for his Ulster "economic mission" came with his
appointment as a member of the Toothill Committee on the Scottish economy.
And yet further responsibility came in 1963 when he was elected president of
the Economic section of the British Association and also a director of the
Scottish Mutual Assurance Society. He holds the Adam Smith Chair of
Political Economy at Glasgow University.
News Letter, Wednesday, February 3, 1965 - And so the Minis go on past the
million mark
CLICK image to read the full story
The electronic "counter" on the vast assembly lines of the British Motor
Corporation's Longbridge factory yesterday registered the fact that, from
the vast array of bits and pieces converging on the main assembly line there
would, in the half-hour or so that it takes to assemble the pieces into
place, emerge an historic vehicle - the millionth B.M.C. mini! What a
triumph for this design - what a double triumph for Alec. Issigonis,
technical director of B.M.C. whose other famous design, the Morris Minor, is
the only other British car to have passed the million mark - and whose hold
on the public affection is such that B.M.C. dare not drop it from their
programme. Issigonis himself has admitted that in the "mini" he has created
something of a "monster." He said this in reply to a comment that whatever
we drive nowadays we are constantly being "buzzed" by drivers of mini cars.
Few will deny that the advent of the "mini" has completely altered out
outlook on motoring - and few will deny that practically every manufacturer
in the world is ageing rapidly as he drives his design team even harder in
search of an effective answer to the B.M.C. "buzz bombs." Fast
with ease The present-day symbol of motoring sophistication is
to own an acknowledged high-powered car and then to drive that car at very
moderate speed. This creates the impression that the driver is in not too
much of a hurry and that, if he wished, he could readily outpace the minis
which flash past him.
