1) 'All's Well That Ends Well' 20th September 1917 France - Dear May, Many thanks for your welcome postcard, but you do not think I have a mouth, (a north & south) like that do you. If I had a mouth like that one, I would go up for a commission, could shout out the orders, tip top. I am glad you had such a good time, when Jim was over, nice fellow that but he does not do a night on the lockup. We are in such a quiet place now, nothing to do at night, but go for good long walks and always by ourselves, that is the worst of it. We are getting plenty of drill rubbed into us, now we are out for a rest, from 6 in the morning till 3-30 in the afternoon. I will send you over my face as soon as I receive it from the photographers at Belfast. Must remind you that you promised me one of yours, the one Anna gave me is well on its way to Auckland, hope she will not be wild. W. W. Buchanan  Bill  P.S. Remember me to Mother and Auntie.

1) 'Les Nouvelles De La Guerre' 21st October 1917 France - Dear May, I have been a long time answering your last welcome letter, but now that you have your big brother with you again, he will be able to explain why. You must have got a shock when you heard about poor Les, we left him behind in a soldiers grave along with three more of our poor boys. I have just heard that Les has been awarded the M. M. but poor fellow did not live to receive the honour bestowed on him. Tell Alex that M. M.'s have been given to L. Corp Pointon, L. Corp. Jim McKenzie and Andy Douglas. I heard that Alex went straight aboard the leave boat so would gain an extra day by that means, would like to be there with him. Do not let him fall in love and get married this time, I want him back here you know, as I am very lonely. We are in a village, the last one built in France and they forgot to finish it, we will all go off our heads if we are to stay here long. Must close now, hoping you and all at home are doing well, I am your friend Bill   W. W. Buchanan. P.S. Sorry to hear of your aunty's illness.
2) 20th November 1917 Londing? - Dear Sousie May, Here I am safely in this village, but not dwelling at the place on the other side. Oh! no, nothing like that about this dear, nice, quiet lad. Ahem! Thinking of going to see the play "Carminetta," this evening. And then tomorrow morning back to the land of frog eating. Remember me to all friends. Be good. love from Jack

3) 1st September 1936 - My own Darling, Was glad to get your letter this morning & know you got on so well, it will be "Peace perfect peace" for you anyway. It was kind of Mr. G. going in with you to the empty house, but I just expected & hoped he would. Pat was not enjoying the service & said her head was sore, so I just brought her out at the Hymn after the collection. Mr. H. said I should have come before. Betty stayed with Mrs. H. & enjoyed it alright, the daughter sang a solo & they all said she had a lovely voice. I hope they will get the same man next year. They all like him well. It is very wet & foggy today so don't expect we will get far, meant to go to Cushendun & call at Miss Fishers. Received Postcards from Etta at Portrush yesterday, burnt mine as it was not very classy, she never send Mrs. H. one. Post on the paper, 2½ d however it is off my mind. Mrs. Purden was in last night, she wanted to book this house for next year if we did not want it, so as I told we hoped to be able to come to it again, she is putting in for ?, it is £16, but has 4 bedrooms & the cooker is in the scullery, also there's an Elec cooker & water in two bedrooms, she has been coming to CD for 11 years. They are Prof. Purden's friends, he was her husbands brother or uncle, I forget which, & John, her son is going ? for medicine, he will be the 8th generation. Think this is all the news, we all slept like tops to 7-40 am this morning. With all our love & hope you don't miss me to much, your own May

1) Dear Mr. White, I duly received your letter of the 27th inst. which interested me very much indeed. Unfortunately I am suffering from a boil on my right hand which prevents me from doing any writing. I will, however, be very pleased to let you have all the Data I can get in connection with the Whiteabbey Boy Scouts as soon as I possibly can. Yours faithfully.
2) "Seawynd" Dalriada Avenue, Cushendall - My Dear Darling Daddy, As I said on my postcard I hope you were able to find all your keys and things. Baby Anne has got a string of red beads so I do not think you need bother getting her a teething ring. Mrs. Harrison was going round to the village yesterday and she came to see if we would come too, we did and Betty and I pushed Baby there and back, she told us all about her "Da-Da" but never a word about "Ma-Ma."  It is very foggy here today but I hope it will clear up. We saw a funeral yesterday while we were in "The Bo?" it was bound for Old Layde, I am sure the whole village turned out to it. It was the poorest looking get up I ever saw drawn by two sleepy looking old brown horses. Thanks for your letter which has just arrived. All my love to you Darling, hugs and kisses from your own Pat x's
3) My Dear Daddy, Mammy & Mrs. Harrison arranged with Jimmy to go to Cushendun yesterday afternoon but in the morning. Mrs. Harrison got a postcard to say some visitors were coming to see her so of course she couldn't come with us. When Jimmy came Mammy got him to take us that run you were talking about. It was beautiful & we enjoyed it very much. When we got home Mrs. Harrison told us that Mr. Ord?, (it was his niece who was to come to see her) had arrived & explained that the visitors couldn't come. However, we are going to Cushendun today with Mrs. Harrison & Baby Anne. I forgot to tell you that the clock stopped to tell you that the clock stopped the other day but we started it (much against my will) & it has gone ever since. Tell Miss Puss that I would like a few words with her about her climbing over the flower pots. I'm glad you enjoyed your self at Mr. Gibson's. I sent Cherry a post card this morning. Please excuse my writing as something has gone wrong with my pen & I'm leaning the writing pad against my knee. Mammy is getting things ready for packing.  Give my love to the bears? beans.? Love & kisses from Betty  Dearest, Glad to know you are alright & that you enjoyed yourself at Mr. Gibson's, it was very kind of them. The children are both well & I feel as 'fit as a fiddle' Mrs. H. is more than kind to us: They are delighted to get the chain, & will send a carrier up as soon as we get back. All my love, your own May
4) Sunday 27th June (most likely 1936 as the 27th of June only falls on a Sunday 1936/1942 etc. and they only moved to Dalriada in 1936) - 'Dallousie or Dalhousie' Dalriada Avenue, Cushendall.  My Dear Mrs. Watson, At last, I find time to write you a few lines, and at that, it is 10-45 on Sunday night. I was so delighted to get your last two letters, and I feel so ashamed at being so long in writing, but I never seem to get a minute. Just last Sunday, I sat down with paper and pen to do some letter writing, and I just got a few lines written to Mother, when some folk come in, and I had to start to get supper! But before I go any further, let me assure you that my seeming neglect has not been from want of thought, as I think about you all so often, and look forward to seeing you in Cushendall again. I am afraid that our visit to Knock shall have to be postponed until after the summer, as I have already started with any visitors - Have had a girl over from Glasgow for the past fortnight, and when she goes, Mr. & Mrs. Dewar? & family arrive. In August, I again have sister Anne, and Cousin Effie, all of whom you know. I see by your last letter that Mr. Watson is changing his holiday this year, that gives him longer to wait but I expect that we shall see Tim? at the beginning of August when he leaves you down. I am just ? for the sight of you all again, you shall see a big change in Anne, as she is quite a big girl now, and keeps us amused. There are very nice people in "your Louie"  this month. They are a London family, and the gent is an artist, but they shall be gone this week, and there shall be changes all round. Mrs. McBride goes this week too, and she has been here since the month of May. They are both very sorry to go, and Mrs. Bride would stay on if the house was not taken, but of course it is taken for July & August. Do you know that I have already started bathing, The water is very cold, but enjoying it, and you make up your mind dear lady, that you have to go in, warm or cold. What about Pat - is she going to bathe this year, and could you not persuade Betty to bathe. Anne is terrified for the water and shall not go near it - she refuses even to look at it. I have been knitting her a play-suit, and just got it finished yesterday. I have recently knitted two jumpers for my two sisters, so don't you think me very industrious.  In your first letter, Mrs. Watson, you were asking about the chateau, Mrs. ? has it let alright, and for three months. She was telling me that she has raised her terms this year, and you shall be amazed when I tell you what she is getting, Was glad to see that Betty and Pat have been doing well at their lessons - it shall not be long now until they shall be able to forget all about them. Give them both a big hug from Anne, and as it is getting late, I shall conclude this with our united warm regards to you all, and although I do not deserve it, I hope to hear from you again soon. Aye yours Effie Harrison. P.S. Eddie is guard today, once I ? Sunday guards, so was glad of my company.
