PORTADOWN

Is a prosperous market town in the County Armagh, twenty-five miles from Belfast, situated on the banks of the Bann.  It is an important railway junction.  The lines of the Great Northern Railway branch off from it to Dublin, Derry, and Armagh, and it is in direct railway communication with Belfast.  The Newry Canal, which joins the Bann about a mile from the town, opens a water communication from Carlingford Lough, and the river itself being navigable all the way to Lough Neagh, affords a ready means for lighters and barges from Belfast and the towns adjoining the Lough.  The ancient name of the town was Port-ne-Doon, or the Port of the Fortified Eminence.  It has increased rapidly within the last half century, the population in 1816 being only 600, while at the census of 1911 it was 11,727, an increase of 1,635, or 16.2 per cent., over previous census.  The manufacture of linen and cambric is extensively carried on.  There are nine large weaving factories and a spinning mill, and several hemstitching factories. Acting jointly with Banbridge, a water supply was brought from the Mourne Mountains in 1906 at a cost to the towns of about £80,000.  A public park, twenty-three acres in extent, has been tastefully laid out in walks, and planted with evergreens and trees of various kinds, surrounded by ornamental railings, and approached by handsome entrances.  The park was taken over by the Town Commissioners on the 1st November 1894.  In 1872 a public library and reading room were established, and were continued until the opening of the Free Library in 1905, when the books, to the number of over 2,000 volumes, were handed over to the committee of the Free Public Library.  The latter was erected in 1904, a grant being made for the purpose by Mr. Carnegie.  The shops' half-holiday is on Thursday

PORTAFERRY

Is a thriving little seaport and market town in County Down, twenty-three miles S.E. by S. from Belfast, situated on the Eastern shore of the strait to the sea that forms the entrance to Strangford Lough.  From the strength of the current the name "Strong-ford," and hence by corruption, Strangford is derived.  At Portaferry there is a good quay, where vessels of light burthen can discharge their cargoes.  A considerable trade is done in coal, timber, corn, potatoes, and agricultural produce.  The herring fishery is carried on from the month of June to September inclusive.  The fairs are held on the 31st July and 12th December, and the second Tuesday monthly.  The shops' half-holiday is on Thursday.  The population in 1911 was 1,518

PORTBALLINTRAE

Is a beautiful seaside village between Portrush and the Giant's Causeway.  It lies at the mouth of the River Bush, at the right of which is the picturesque seat of the late Lord Macnaghten, known as Runkerry Castle, while on the left stands prominent on the coast the residence of J. G. Leslie, D.L., and on the east the eye stretches as far as Knocklayd, the intervening country being diversified with pastures green and well-cultivated farms and homesteads.  As a quiet pleasure resort, Portballintrae can compare favourably with its northern rivals.  The village is easily reached by way of the Giant's Causeway Electric Tramway, and is only about twenty minutes' walk along a beautiful road to Bushmills

PORTGLENONE

Is situated in the County Antrim, on the River Bann, about nine miles from Ballymena and thirty-three from Belfast.  It was the seat of the handloom linen works, but it is now an agricultural district.  There is a certain amount of hand embroidery and drawn-thread work carried on in numerous cottages in the neighbourhood.  A considerable trade is carried on in the manufacture of bricks from the peculiar white clay found on the banks of the river.  Markets are held every Tuesday, and Petty Sessions on the first Thursday of every month.  The United Kingdom Peat Company and the Diatonite Clay Works Company have both opened extensive peat and clay works along the river Bann, which have given employment to many of the inhabitants, both male and female.  The population is 401

PORTRUSH

Until recent years Portrush, or "Port Rosse," as it is called by Dr. Todd, situate in the North of Antrim, about six miles North-East from Coleraine, and seven from the far-famed Giant's Causeway, was but a small fishing village.  Its popularity as a watering-place and the charm and attractiveness of its surrounding scenery has, however, of late brought it into great repute, and been the means of increasing its population considerably.  The Northern Counties Railway Co., built a new station some years ago, and there are several handsome churches in the district. The Clarke Memorial Obelisk has been removed from where it stood adjacent to the Methodist Church, and erected in the church green.  There are excellent lending libraries in connection with the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches, and a branch of the Girl's Friendly Society has been established.  Coal and Clothing Clubs for the benefit of the poor of the town and surrounding districts have been established in connection with the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches.  The trip to the Causeway has been rendered both interesting and enjoyable, from the fact that visitors are conveyed by means of the first Electric Tramway in the United Kingdom.  The principal source of revenue is derived from the large number of visitors continually pouring in from all parts of the kingdom to the splendid golf links.  A ladies' course is also laid out, and this is largely patronised.  The bathing accommodation is excellent, and hot sea baths may be had.  It may be added that bathing is safe at all times of the day and in all conditions of the tide.  Population, 2,107.  Valuation, £14,166.  The shops' half-holiday is on Wednesday

PORTSTEWART

The Town of Portstewart is situate on the sea shore, midway between Portrush and Castlerock.  It is one of the most charming, salubrious, and popular of Northern health resorts, and year by year is becoming increasingly popular.  Situated most charmingly, over-looking one of the finest bays in Ireland, the outlets of the rivers Bann and Foyle, and completely sheltered from north-east, and east winds, it has grown steadily within the past few years, in the course of which many improvements have been effected in every direction.  The Urban District Council have already carried out much needed improvements which were impossible prior to granting of urban powers in 1916.  The granting of perpetuity leases by the landlady gave a remarkable impetus to the building trade, and will, it is believed, eventually result in the erection of numerous villa residences on a scale even more complete and artistic than any hitherto erected.  In addition to the many private houses let for the accommodation of visitors, the town is supplied with four good hotels.  Portstewart was the birthplace of Dr. Chas. Lever, the talented novelist, and Sir George White.  The town is connected with the Portrush branch of the Northern Counties Railway by a steam tram, and there is a splendid 18-hole golf course, together with a 9-hole one.  A public hall was erected some years ago, containing reading and recreation rooms, and is much patronised and appreciated by the residents and visitors.  There is also a fine Orange Hall.  The town, leading hotels, and houses are lighted by electricity.  The shops' half-holiday is on Thursday

POYNTZPASS

Poyntzpass is situated eight miles north of Newry and four miles from Tandragee. It occupies a position on the borders of Armagh and Down, a small part of the town being in the latter county.  It is a station on the Great Northern Railway, and there are quays on the canal, where lighters discharge coal brought from Newry.  There is a good cattle fair on the first Saturday in each month, for the accommodation of buyers, at which the railway company have lately made several improvements, which greatly facilitate the enrailing of beasts.  A market is held every Friday for fowl, butter, and eggs.  A short distance to the east of Poyntzpass are portions of remarkable earthworks known as the "Glen of the Black Pig" or the "Danes' Cart," but which may more correctly be termed the Great Wall of Ulidia or Ulster, which was formed in A.D. 352 by the Ulidians or Ulstermen after their defeat and the destruction of the palace of their kings at Emmania or Navan, near the city of Armagh, by the Three Collas. This "wall" can be traced from Lisnagade on the north of Scarva to Meigh, near Jonesborough, and is a most remarkable erection.  Population in 1911, 348
