Huc Te Si Reducem Referat Via
"Here, if the road shall bring thee back, The road thou
hast forgot, yet still dost seek,
'Look,' thou shall say, 'I do remember it. Here was I born, and here I stay
my feet.
This is my fatherland.' And if thou hast a mind to look again upon the
night that thou hast left behind
Lying upon all lands, Thyself shalt see, The tyrants whom their wretched
people dread,
Are naught but exiled men."
September 1938 Helen Waddell

OBITUARY - Agnes Acheson
Generations of Victorians have reason to remember Miss Agnes Acheson with
great gratitude for she shepherded so many of us happily through our very
early schooldays which, in a school as large as Victoria College, could have
been very alarming. She had all the qualities that make a teacher much
loved. She was sympathetic, encouraging, reassuring and fair-minded,
and she made all her pupils, even the most refractory, feel cherished and
understood. By her humorous approach to the difficulties which loomed
like mountains on small children's horizons, she managed to reduce them to
molehills; again by her humorous and unruffled handling of malefactors she
maintained a happy discipline which irked nobody.
My own first memory of
Miss Acheson, "Fuzzy" as I soon discovered she was called, dates to my first
day at Victoria in 1929. I was being escorted to school by my mother
and we were hesitating about which door we should use. Miss Acheson,
who had travelled on the same tram, saw our dilemma and came, took me by the
hand, escorted me into school by the Crescent door and handed me over to a
trusty senior. It was a measure of my immediate confidence in Miss
Acheson that I went with her without a qualm. And that was the
confidence we all had in her. She was utterly reliable and
imperturbable.
Apart from the many
intangible lessons we unconsciously learned from her, she taught us
mathematics - "simplifies is simply flies" is one of her well remembered
mnemonics - and geography. Many must share my memories of making real
plaster Cave Hills on contour outline maps, a most satisfying, messy
occupation.
When we advanced to
higher classes and were no longer taught by her, she never lost touch with
us. She was always ready to talk to us and many conversations were
held at the window at the top of the first flight of stairs on the days when
she sold biscuits. We always came away warmed by her continuing
affection and interest. That interest never flagged and she never
forgot anyone. One of the pleasures of visiting Victoria after leaving
school was that Miss Acheson was there to welcome her old pupils back and
always made reference to some happening in which they had been personally
involved. That is real remembering.
Miss Acheson taught at
Victoria for twenty-four years (1919-1943). She loved and was loved.
We can only hope as we pay tribute to her that her own happiness equalled
the happiness she gave to all those who knew her. ELEANOR M. DAVIS
(1929-1937)
ADELAIDE RODDEN
The news of Adelaide Rodden's death will have brought distress to the
many Victorians who knew her as a schoolgirl and as a teacher. Miss
Rodden returned to Victoria in 1937 as a member of staff in the Mathematics
Department after several years of teaching elsewhere. Her pleasure at
being back was evident to us all and she quickly earned for herself a place
of affection with girls and staff alike.
She will, perhaps, best
be remembered by that relatively small group of girls who passed through the
senior forms of the Evacuation School at Portballintrae during the war
years. There, in our small almost family community, we came to love
and revere her as a headmistress and to appreciated her qualities - outside
the realm of teaching - of absolute fairness and kindly interest in every
girl in the school. A loyal Old Victorian, she was always particularly
delighted to hear of the successes of Old Girls in any sphere and would take
great pleasure in announcing these to the school and in giving us news of
the main body of the school which had elected to remain in Belfast.
In the classroom she was
indeed a stern disciplinarian but would often reveal to her class a great
sense of humour, a depth of sympathy and understanding and an abundance of
patience, especially with the unmathematical girl.
Her immaculate appearance
and her fastidiousness in all things were admired by the untidiest of her
pupils and her geometrical work on the blackboard was a joy to watch.
Miss Rodden was a great
lover of sports and a keen enthusiast in the House system. She was
always to be seen among the spectators at cup matches and at the many
inter-house activities between Dunluce, Rathlin and Moyle in those memorable
wartime days at Portballintrae.
Her appointment after the
war as Headmistress of Strathearn was a source of pride to all her friends;
and though at that time already suffering from poor health, she was able to
see the realisation of her great ambition - the birth of the Senior School
there - before her illness forced her to retire in 1956.
We shall miss her sadly
at school functions - how proud she would have been to be present at the
Centenary celebrations. Our sympathy goes out to her four sisters, all
Old Victorians. We are glad to know that after much suffering her
death came, in the end, peacefully in her sleep. H.E.R.D.
JANE A. McNEILL
Many
Old Victorians learned with profound sorrow of the sudden death of Janie
McNeill in March. Miss McNeill's interest in Victoria College began in
her youth. Though educated mainly at Campbell College, where her
father was headmaster, towards the end of her school career she attended
senior classes in Victoria. If, however, her actual attendance as a
schoolgirl was a brief one, her loyalty and devotion to the school were
lifelong. Her Sunday afternoon class at Drumglass was, before the war,
a regular and popular feature in the life of the boarders, who gained much
from their contact with one who loved and understood youth and taught
Christianity by her own example. Those who were invited to her home at
Belmont formed friendships with her which did not end with their schooldays.
For many years she was editor of the "Victorian" and in this field her
scholarship, wisdom and good taste proved invaluable assets. To the
end of her life, though in recent years she had become increasingly crippled
and could no longer walk without the aid of two sticks, she remained
undaunted by physical disabilities to which a less courageous person would
have succumbed and she seldom missed a school concert, prizegiving or Old
Girls' reunion. She entered heart and soul into the preparations for
the Centenary and was writing part of the history of Victoria College which
is now being compiled. Indeed, on the morning after her death a friend
visiting the house found on the writing desk in her drawing room this
unfinished task, at which she had been working the evening before.
But though Victoria held
a special place in her heart, it did not fill the whole of it, for her heart
was large, and, as she gave her kindness and sympathy to innumerable
friends, her reserves of friendship seemed to grow, for the well of her
generosity was unfathomable. Her sense of duty, which never faltered,
showed itself in her care of those dependent on her, her public spiritedness
expressed itself in acts of service to the community. With these more
solid qualities were linked an irrepressible, almost impish sense of fun and
an inexhaustible memory for amusing anecdotes which made her a delightful
companion and a most entertaining storyteller. Her circle of friends
comprised a wide group of ages, ranging from school children to
grandparents.
Her interest in
literature, like her benevolence, was genuine; and it included not only
writing but writers. She could quote from the work of Helen Waddell
and C. S. Lewis whom she knew, as well as from nineteenth century poetry,
Irish songs, minor Elizabethans and old ballads she had memorised from
constant reading. She was, in fact, a striking example of a woman
whose knowledge sprang from private study rather than from a standardised
education and for that reason among others she is of interest to us.
Her fresh mind showed itself in her defence of the Victorian Age, which she
regards as robust rather than pompous; this was the theme of some of the
literary papers she wrote, notably one on Victorian humour.
Nevertheless she was almost equally interested in Herrick, in the
Elizabethans and in any tale or poem with a sense of destiny. She
herself spoke of death as the sixteenth century travellers had spoken of it,
as a journey.
The pain of parting is
the price we must pay for friendship. It is in the abiding memories of
friendship that this pain will find its healing and those of us who knew and
loved Janie McNeill may look to find consolation in these memories. ".
. . . the pain doth fade; the joy remains."
