James Noble - McDonnan -
Ye Olde Ulster Fancie Fayre 1882
James Noble
James
Noble was born in Scotland in the town of Renfrew on 14th April 1858,
his mother was Sarah Miller before her marriage and was a native of
Dunbarton, his father, also James Noble, was born at Umgall,
Templepatrick but was of Scottish origin. His early life was spent
in the village of Bowling on the outskirts of Dumbarton, as a young boy
he was brought over to Belfast and the family lived in the Sandy Row
area which was then, believe it or not, on the outskirts of Belfast.
When he was a young boy he went to Sunday school at
Berry Street Presbyterian Church, on one occasion he went to school in
his bare feet and the minister, the Rev. Hugh Hanna, ejected him out of
the room - SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME ONTO ME, AND
FORBID THEM NOT. The citizens of Belfast erected a statue
to that minister.
In the 1860's children did not receive an education
comparable to the present time, he was not good at spelling and was
inclined to write words phonetically. He was however a naturally
clever young man and became interested in music, he taught himself to
read Tonic Solfa notation then took an active interest in mixed voice
choirs.
When he married Ellen Childs on 14th March 1884 he
moved to the Newtownards Road area; this district was just being
developed from fields, Bryson Street was just being built and he moved
into No. 59 as the first tenant. Glentoran Football Club played in a
field just opposite the house.
In the early 1890's he started a mixed voice choir
which met in a building called The Sailors Institute and which was
situated at successful gave concerts in churches of all denominations in
Belfast and surrounding district. One evening he was walking down
Newtownards Road on his way to a practice, a number of youths were
holding up a pub wall like they used to do, they were singing songs and
he thought they sounded quite well, he walked over, congratulated them
on their efforts and asked if they would like to join a proper choir.
They said "yes" and so they all trouped down to the Institute and
started a more purposeful way of life.
His elder daughter Margaret, who was a teacher by
profession and a good pianist, acted as his accompanist. In the
late 1950's his daughter Mary was staying at Portrush, during a shower
of rain she was sheltering beside an old couple and to make
conversation, mentioned a Salvation Army choir which was in the tow that
week, the lady said "Ach dear, when I was young I was in a real choir,
it was run by a Mr. Noble."
James was a wood-cutting machinist by profession and
worked in the joiners shop of Harland & Wolff Ltd. He was not a
member of any political party but being treasurer of his trade union he
has leanings toward Labour. During the early sectarian & political
troubles of 1920-1923 he was approached by the Vigilance Committee at
his work and asked "Are you a member of any Socialist Organisation" his
reply was a good example of how to take the wind out of a persons sails,
He answered "Yes, I am a member of Belfast Cooperative Society."
