1) 23rd October 1894  This is to certify that Mr. Samuel Milligan has been for nearly two years connected with my congregation. During that time he has been regular in his attendance at the Sabbath services. In the neighbourhood in which he resides he bears a high character. He is an abstainer. From what I know of him I can confidently recommend him for the position of Principal teacher. For eight years he has been assistant in Mountpottinger N.S., a school, which I know to be one of the best disciplined & conducted in the city. Mont Oriel, Bloomfield 23rd October 1894.  T. R. Ballantine
2) 24th October 1894  The Manse, Strandtown, Belfast - It is gratifying to have an opportunity of bearing testimony to the qualifications of Mr. Samuel Milligan as a teacher. He has now been acting as one of the Assistants in the Mountpottinger Schools for the last 15 years, and the fact that he has given complete satisfaction to the Head Teacher, who is one of the best teachers in connection with the Board, should be, itself, a high testimonial. I have now for many years read with great care the reports of different inspectors who have had charge of the School, and one and all have testified to the efficiency of the assistants. Mr. Milligan could have no better training for managing a School on his own account, and from what I know of him, I am sure he will discharge any duties he undertakes with energy and efficiency. I would therefore rejoice to see him in charge of a good school in which he would get a field for his energies. William McKean, 24th October 1894

7) 20th March 1926  "Annsboro" 194 Queen Street, Concord West - Dear Father, We were all very sorry to hear of mother's death, but it was a happy release for her, by the suffering she had this last few years. They will all miss her very much, especially yourself and Lizzie, who have been with her all the time, I expect you will move back to the city again. It will not be much of a life for you, to be buried away out there. Twenty miles from nowhere. I see by Lena's letter that you have still got Bob's little girl with you. She will be great company for you and Lizze. She must be near seven years old now. It was bad luck for you not getting the extra time as it would have been a big difference in your pension. Do you often go down to see Bob and Lena. How are they all keeping. Their families must be near men and women now. Except Bob has started to raise another family. Tell him I saw old Carlisle's photo in a Sydney paper, he was riding an old push bike.  Things are pretty bad out here. It started to rain last night, the first we have seen for about six months. It has been a very hot summer, nothing but heat waves day after day, until we are almost shrivelled up. x I stopped here. Lizzie has been rearing Muscovy ducks this past 18 months. She sold about £3 worth yesterday and the people came for them about 15 minutes ago so I had to knock off writing to catch them.  We are all in the best of health out here, Louie has been away in camp since last Wednesday, he will be home again this week. All the boys out here have got to be soldiers, Louie will be 20 years of age on the 3rd April, and here will be 13 years on the 25th June. He still works with me in Bergers Paint Works. We are both clerks only he gets a fortnights holidays on full pay and I don't. If you ever see James Flanagan or any of his family remember us to him. With best wishes from myself and family. Hoping you are all in the best of health. I remain, Yours affectionately Lewis

3) Testimonials of Samuel Milligan: The Manse, Strandtown, Belfast.  It is gratifying to have an opportunity of bearing testimony to the qualifications of Mr. William McKean  ~  Mr. Samuel Milligan has been assistant teacher in this School for 15 years, during which time I have had very much reason to be pleased with the manner in which he has discharged his duties to the classes intrusted to him.  He has been most regular and punctual - never being absent and never late.  While good tempered and considerate with the boys of his classes, he has been very careful and painstaking in preparing them for the annual examinations, and his efforts have been rewarded by conspicuous success.  I consider him, therefore, a very suitable candidate for Principalship of any National School. Arthur Black, Principal Teacher, Mountpottinger M.N.S.  ~  Mr. S. Milligan has been a teacher in this neighbourhood for several years, and has also been a member of my congregation. Through his School is not under my management, I can testify to his success as a teacher. He is well spoken of both by parents and children, and the examinations in his School have been most satisfactory.  J. B. Thomson, Pres. Min. The Manse, Castlereagh  ~  It affords me much pleasure to bear my testimony to the uniform good character of Mr. Samuel Milligan, whom I have known for many years. He has been assistant teacher in Mountpottinger Male School for some years, in which capacity he has deservedly earned a good name and report. He now seeks to be appointed to the Principalship of the School, for which position I have every reason to believe he is eminently qualified in every respect.
