The Story of Ardglass by James McCabe Napier 1966 - In Memoriam Hester Mary
Napier and James McCabe Napier. The manuscript of this publication was given
to me by the author in the early Spring of 1964 and just prior to his
leaving for a holiday in Canada. On the day of his departure from Ardglass I
visited him at his home, "Redcot", The Downs, and showed him the proof of
this production, and obtained his consent to dedicate the booklet to the
memory of his wife, who had died just six months previously. That visit was
to be the last occasion on which I was to see James McCabe Napier, for
within a week or so of his departure to Canada the sad news reached is of
his sudden death whilst on the train from Montreal to Toronto. He had almost
reached his destination, but unfortunately never met his friends to which he
had looked forward so much. Little did I ever think that I would again be
officiating at the same graveside in the beautiful and peaceful churchyard
at Ballee Parish Church, where is dear wife had been laid to rest such a
short time before. Jim and Hester Napier were beloved by their many
friends, both in Ardglass and further afield. Their home was an open door to
sincere friendship and generous hospitality. They were devoted to the Parish
Church of St. Nicholas, and gave themselves fully to its worship and work.
Jim Napier had a distinguished bank career and served in many parts of
Ireland, and latterly at the Markets Branch in Belfast. In his retirement in
Ardglass he devoted much time and energy to the interests of the local
community. In addition to being a member of the Select Vestry of the Parish
Church, he was also a member of the Golf Club Council, the Harbour
Improvement Committee and vice-chairman of the local branch of the British
Legion. He also found time to write, and his talent in this respect is well
displayed in this admirable account of "The Story of Ardglass" which is both
interesting and scholarly. He wrote several short plays, some of which have
had the distinction of being broadcast. This book is now published in the
hope that many will share in the riches of the history and beauty of the
ancient Borough of Ardglass. The Rector, churchwardens, select vestry and
parishioners of St. Nicholas' Parish Church now respectfully and lovingly
dedicate this publication to the memory of Jim and Hester Napier, who found
much peace and happiness amidst these ancient surroundings, and whose lives
enriched all who had the privilege of knowing them. Surely as we recall the
beautiful and Christ-like quality of their lives, we too can join in David's
lament over Saul and Jonathan: "They were lovely and pleasant in their
lives, and in their death they were not divided." Desmond Fleming,
Rector of St. Nicholas' Parish Church, Ardglass (1961-66). The Rectory,
Ardglass, 11th February, 1966

1) Carragloon Tales of our Townland by W. R. Megaw 1935 - The characters
portrayed in these tales are fictitious. The townland of Carragloon is not
to be found on the map. Yet, it is hoped that the lighter side of a type of
Ulster life is depicted, and in a way that is kindly.
