1) 12th December 1935 Postmark Geatharlach to Mrs. J. O. Adair, The
Standard Hotel, Harcourt Street, Dublin - Ballynoe, 11.12.35 My dearest
Maddie(?), Thank you very much for your letter. May isn't crossing now till
Monday night so I won't be up till Tuesday. I sent her your letter and I'm
sure she would love to lunch with you. I hear Mrs. Wilson is staying on at
the Step House, anyhow for 2 years but it may not be true however Ethel is
sure to know. It looks and feels exactly like snow here this afternoon. I
got a letter from Aileen(?) on Monday and she said Rachel might be coming
down to Weston this week but I lunched at N.T.B. on Monday and Daphne said
nothing about it. I enclose your Oriental Consolidated dividend and there is
one just come into the No. 2 account as well. With best love and I'll see
you Tuesday. Ever your ? ? Jack
2) 4th February 1940 Postmark Peshawar R.M. to Mrs. J. O. Adair, at
Glenadda, Newcastle, Co. Down, Northern Ireland - Feb. 4th from Lady
Cunningham, Government House, Peshawar N.W.F.P. I don't think I ever thanked
you for the Delphinium seeds which you sent me. They arrived alright & I am
going to have them planted soon & will take them to Nathia(?) in boxes ready
to plant out. Pat is here this week-end. He had a good hunt this morning
which he enjoyed. G. has been in Delhi for his ?ay's(?) this week. He gets
back to night. We have been having a lot of rain here & it is very cold now.
There must have been some hitch in the air mail's lately as every one is
complaining about not getting letters for over a fortnight. I was sorry to
hear about Willie Ke????? & I got a very sad account of Gerrie Comullan(?) I
am now just going to try & play golf with Pat but as he is very good & I
have only played once this year, it won't be a very serious game! Love from
K.
3) 20th December 1932 Postmark Tullow to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o Lt.
Col. E. G. Langford, D.S.O., Stallards, Wellington, Somerset, England -
Ballynoe, 19.12.32 My dearest Muddie?, I'm afraid there is another 7/6 to go
on to your Income Tax, its a Canadian dividend which came in in April and
its the difference between the old Income Tax 3/6 and the new one. I also
send you Winnie and Kathleens cheque if you sign and endorse the latters
I'll lodge it to her account and when these cheques are in I'll get the No.
2 account made up and send you a statement, there will be over £50 in hand,
so I should think you might give Winnie another £50. We've had a howling
gale here the last few days, and now its turned into torrents of rain. I had
the mare out at Rath on Saturday and she went well but she gets mad with
excitement and is a bit of a handful to ride, however I expect she will
settle down soon. Poor Corey Grogan is having no luck at all this season, he
got another fall last week and put his finger? out. With best love to you
all from your ? ? Jack
4) 23rd May 1935 Postmark ? to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o E. S. Clarke,
Esq., Ballyaughlis, Lisburn, Co. Down - Ballynoe, 25.5.35 My dearest Muddie,
Mr. Fry wrote to me and told me that he had already written to you to say
that Judge(?) Wylie gave you £50 out of the Nugent estate. I've never heard
anything from Aunt Flo about the ? Street house so don't think she can have
got my letter, so I wrote to her again yesterday. I enclose Wthants rent.
It's terribly dry here and I'm afraid things will be really serious if we
don't get rain soon as it is there won't be any hay crop. We played cricket
at Coollekin(?) on Saturday last and 3 of our side didn't turn up, we got
beaten. On Sunday we went to Benereuy(?). Charlie is getting very bent and
stiff and only now plays golf. Olive has gone to England and in July goes to
fish in Norway, taking Corry and Evelyn Booth. I hope your foot is quite
well again. With best love, ever your loving son Jack

1) (letter came in this envelope but dates don't match) 16th April 1936
Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o Capt. Adair, Deneadda?
Ballinafad? Connemara - Ballynoe 16/6/36 My dearest Maddie, Thank you very
much for your letter with the war coin? certificates, the Land Bonds aren't
due till next month. I expect you will like it in Belgravia and with the
rate of exchange living must be very cheap there. I've just had a letter
from Mr. Fry about getting this place registered in my name and I have now
got to get a Valuation made, and could you also let me know your exact age
as they want that as well. I don't know whether they will take your word for
it or whether they will want a Copy of your birth Certificate, if they do,
have you got it or know where it is? I suppose its unavoidable but there
seems to be an unnecessary amount of work and expense attached to this
business. We went up to Glenbide(?) yesterday for lunch, Lady Waterford is
there with the children for a month, and today it is raining at last, not
very heavily but quite steadily but we really want about 3 days of it to do
any real good. I enclose merchants Ky? rent. with best love, ever your
loving son Jack
2) 8th December 1935? Postmark Lisburn to Mrs. Adair, at Gowrie,
Upper Glenageary, Kingstown, Dublin - Nov. 15th, 7 Commissioner Road,
Peshawar, N.W.F.P. (again the dates don't match exactly) Darling Muddie?
Just a line to catch the mail today. I haven't left much time to write so it
won't be a long letter. I got yours on Sunday written from the club in
Belfast & it was the first I had heard of you not going to Tasmania. I think
you were wise to put off the trip, it might have been too much of an
undertaking for you & such a very long way to go by yourself. I hope you
will go back to Glenageary for the winter as it sounded to be quite fairly
comfortable for you & the people kind. I had an air mail letter from Dora
saying that Hester will come straight here from Bombay arriving on December
10th & I think Dora would like us to keep her till she goes to Calcutta in
January, as all the other friends in places where she might go seem vague.
So I think I may expect to have her here for quite a month. I hope she is
not as bad as I expect. But I don't know how I will cope with her if she is
very noisy & vulgar. George will be so angry. It is so unfortunate that
Deny's Bernard & Bina Brooke are leaving India soon, otherwise they would
have had to have had her too. The council finished on ???day which has been
a busy 10 days for George, now he is having an easier time. I heard from
Aunt Flo that Jack had returned from Germany almost cured, I do hope he
really is. We are going away next weekend to Kohat & George is going to shot
on Monday with the Governor at a big partridge shoot. The Poppy Day
collection here was a great success & there was more money collected than
ever before. You told me in your last letter to write to Aileen as you
didn't know where you would be, so I will send this to Ballyaughlis. I
haven't time to write her too, so I will address it to you both so she can
read it before she sends it on. We have got a lovely lot of Chrysanthemums
out now. All our seedlings have been planted out in the last week, so this
garden is beginning to look more interesting now, but we have to wait till
the middle & end of January till it is really good. Much love ? ? Kat
3) 8th December 1933 Postmark Tullow, Co. Carlow to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o
Mrs. berry, Gowrie, Upper Glenageary, Co. Dublin - 8.12.33 Ballynoe, Tulllow
My dearest Muddie, Thank you very much for your letter. We are sending off
your coat today, and here is your rebate of income tax. I hope you are
liking your place better now that you are settled down. We are having the
most beastly cold weather and I wouldn't be surprised if it started to snow
at any moment. We went over to Newtownbay(?) on Wednesday and got a lot of
plants out of the garden at Ballinapark and we are going back sometime soon
to get more. We've been invited to spend Xmas at Oak Park but aren't going
as we can't very well leave the house and mare and dog at Xmas time with
Tommy and Brown on holiday. Hunting has been bad though we had quite a nice
hunt from Gravey(?) on Tuesday. Tomorrow we are dra?ing Newtown Hill and I
expect it will be a bit cold up there. With best love, Ever your loving Son
Jack
4) 2nd June 1933 Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
c/o E. S. Clarke, Esq., Ballyaughlis, Lisburn, Co. Down - 2.6.33 Ballynoe My
dearest Muddie, I was very glad to get your letter and am sorry you haven't
been well but I hope the change to Aileen will do you good. I am sending you
Wybrants? Cheque and 3 dividends which have just arrived. I haven't heard
any more about the Hutchinson Estate but I suppose it will come through in
time, you don't owe the No. 2 account anything out of that last rebate, it
was all on your own money. We went to the Loftus? wedding yesterday and May
seemed to enjoy it but it was a very long affair and went on from 12 o'clock
to 5.30 and was raining most of the day which rather spoilt it. I spent 2
days up at Glenbridge? about the shooting rights and got on better than I
expected but its hard to deal with some of those people. I think I'm getting
better but its a slow job. I hope Aileen and Ted enjoyed their visit to
Lisadell(?) and got some fish. with best love ever your loving Son Jack

1) 17th October 19?? Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
c/o Mrs. Booth, Weston, Newtown Hall, Co. Wexford - Oct. 17 Ballynoe, Tullow
My dear "Jack & Mother" It seems just one trouble after another - what with
tyre & fix up the dogs & the house & all the Halls or Houses? so that we can
do what we can to help in the war. Jack gave me your letter is all well. I
have signed on to the Red x from next Wednesday week (Nov. 1st) & Jack - I
hope, will come over to England with me & we will soon get in to a job when
over there, I know - & we both feel that it is impossible for us to sit at
home in peace & plenty when our men are needing all the help that the Allied
people can & should give. For 8 years I have just worked the keep & the
house & all that is in it is in good order etc. & now its all ? & tidy &
ready to shut up. Browne & Mrs. Browne & the two little girls are going to ?
? to live so that ? ? ? can be kept going for the sale of the furniture &
the house. I am sorry - ? it now too late -(& ? a was a!) to ? ? house ? ?
are here to take anything out of the house. You hardly know what it means &
the mess & muddle it make - I have done at least 20 "house movings" & ? ?
ourselves & the people & I know it too well. S????? now told me I could use
some of ? furniture ? ? now request? it. I have done so - as the easiest way
of taking proper care of it - & also it has made the house pretty? & ? ? ? ?
? ? - & I have made ? ? ? ? ? ....... (I give up, this writing is giving
me a headache, click on the images) with love Andy?
2) 12th May 1933 Postmark ? to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o Miss Halanhan?
Blenheim, Marlborough Road, Glenageary, Co. Dublin - 12.5.33 Ballynoe,
Tullow My dearest Muddie, Thank you very much for your latter. I enclose
Healys & Lawlers rents for you to sign. I've now been put on a diet
consisting of 2 boiled eggs a day and milk & biscuits and so far I can't say
it has done we much good but I suppose it will take time. The river has run
down to nothing again and fishing is hopeless and we really want rain again
now for the garden though everything is looking well and we ought to have a
very good year for fruit. The Budget wasn't so bad after all but now it
looks as if we are in for another Election and if he gets in this time which
I suppose he will it means a republic. I didn't know the total amount of the
Hutchinson sale and for the rent it comes to considerably less than wheat
you tell me so it must include some reduced head? rents, however so much the
better and if its what you say you can easily give Winnie £250 and still
have some over. with best love, ever your loving Son Jack
3) Ballyaughlis My da?? Muddie, I am so awfully sorry to hear about
the servant upsets at Gowrie, it doesn't sound at all comfortable? & if you
really feel that you can't stand it you must tell me & I'll try & find
somewhere else. I had a very nice letter from Miss Hallahan in answer to
mine & I think she would have ? luck at anytime. I got the new cook on
Tuesday but she tells me today that she can't stay, she says it is too far
from everyone especially from Derry where her home is, she knew that before
she came, but I suppose the truth is that she doesn't like the place. I am
sorry as she seems a comfortable reliable sort of woman but she is not as
good a cook as Susan in many ways. I shall have to cook for awhile now.
Lottie is going for her holiday on Saturday & Eddie returns on Tuesday. I
have asked Lady Craigavon? to Bridge on Monday & Lady Dixon on Wednesday &
have to get an ? bridge ? for her as she wont play contract. The Depot sale
is doing fairly well, we took about £40 on Monday & they took over £100 on
Tuesday, I don't know about Wednesday or today. I don't know what to think
about Mr. or Mrs. Thomas reply to ? ? I personally thought it was weak ? ?
?, the English papers all applaud him for not committing himself to
anything, so perhaps he was right. We have appointed a scotch girl, a Miss
McClean as the new organizing ? secretary, she sounds marvellous & is asking
£100 less than Miss Martin. I opened enclosed as it was addresses to you &
me. Has Dr. Berry given you any medicine or treatment & are you still taking
Dr. Grahams bottle. with much love ? from ? Aileen
4) 24th January 1935 Postmark Tullow to Mrs. J. O. Adair, 7 Upper
Mount Street, Dublin - Ballynoe 24.1.35 I can't come up till Monday now, but
will see you then. Jack

3) 7th October 1935 Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
Island Cot?, Shimna Road, Newcastle, Co. Down 0 from J. V. Adair, Ballynoe,
Tullow, Co. Carlow 7.10.5 or 8? - I've just heard from Lady Waterford that
she wants me to meet her at Glenbride(?) Wed. afternoon. So I'll spend that
night with Aunt Flo and come up by the 9 o'clock train Thursday morning. I
find that it will cost me about 1£ to get tryptique? driving license
etc. for the car so its cheaper to come by train.
4) ? October 1938 Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
Island Cot? Shimna Road, Newcastle, Co. Down - from J. V. Adair, Ballynoe,

1) 14th February 1936 Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
Standard Hotel, Harcourt Street, Dublin - Ballynoe 14.2.36 My dearest
Muddie, Thank you ever so much for your letter and birthday present which
will be most useful for buying myself some fishing things and as so far I
haven't been able to get a tenant it looks as if I'll have to work hard at
it myself. Its raining hard here and the snow at last going but the avenue
is still all blocked. We haven't heard any more how Ted is getting on or
whether any more of the, have got the measles. We are coming up on Tuesday
so I'll look in and see you sometime in the afternoon. with best love and
again thank you ever so much for your presents. ever your loving Son Jack
2) 17th June 1935 Postmark Tulach O'Bhfeidhlim to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
Killeaden House, Kiltenagh?, Co. Mayo - Ballynoe 16.6.35 My dearest Muddie,
I enclose Merchants Quay rents. I've looked through everything I can find
here and can't find that deed of transfer and tomorrow I'm going to Dublin
and will get those boxes out of the Bank, and if its not there I suppose
then only thing to do is to get Aunt Flo sign another. She is home again now
so I'll try and get it ? tomorrow. We are having too much rain now,
desperate storms every day and a high wind which is knocking every thing
about badly in the garden. I'll go and see Capt. Stanford about your
furniture but we can't do much till the weather settles as its essential to
get a fine day. We were over at Newtownabbey on Thursday playing Cricket.
Uncle Bertie has just bought himself a huge new car. I expect you've heard
that Olive is taking Evelyn to fish in Norway for a month. with best love,
ever your loving Son Jack
3) 19th January 1939 Postmark Baile Atha Cliath to Mrs. J. O. Adair,
Island Cot? Shimna Road, Newcastle, Co. Down - 39 Sandford Road, Ranelagh,
Dublin 19.1.39 - My dearest Muddie, I brought May up yesterday and she has
just had the operation, it was mostly successful and Kinnear says she will
be able to leave the hospital Tuesday or Wednesday. She went to the
Adelaides as it is so much cheaper and as Kinnear is one of the Surgeons
there it was all right. Ben Plunket? was splendid and got her a private room
and she is really very comfortable. It was most awful good of you to send
that £5 and it really will be a great help. I don't know whether I'll see
Aileen as I don't think I'll be hunting on Saturday but I sent her word I'd
be at home tomorrow afternoon so she may call in, I'm afraid I never wrote
and thanked you for the last cheque you sent me, but I've really had a very
worrying time lately. with very best love and thanks, ever your loving Son
Jack
4) 5th September 1933 Postmark Tullow, Co. Carlow to Mrs. J. O.
Adair, Blenheim, Marlborough Road, Glenageary, Co. Dublin - Ballynoe 6.9.33
My dearest Muddie, Thank you very much for your letter and ever so much for
the cheque which was awfully good of you to send me but I'm returning it as
I'm now not going to Gunns(?), a more than kind and generous friend, whose
only stipulation is that I've not to mention their name, has offered to send
me ? to Freiburg in Germany where they are supposed to be wonderfully good
and I am off there as soon as we can find out particulars. It's a wonderful
bit of luck, and I only hope they won't keep us there too long. You never
sent back to dividend warrant for the interest on the Hutchinson Land Bonds,
that was only for your signature and then to go to the bank. I enclose 2
more dividends New Zealand and Guinnese(?) It's terribly dry here again. The
hounds were at Castlemore this morning but I didn't go. I only got the mare
in on Saturday. with best love, ever your loving Son Jack

1) ? Postmark ? to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o E. S. Clarke, Esq.,
Ballyaughlis, Lisburn, Co. Down - Ballynoe 17.11.33 My dearest Muddie, Thank
you very much for your letter. I do hope your week in a nursing home did you
good and that you are feeling better now. I enclose two rents for your
signature and also a letter and form about that labourers plot, the owner of
which can't be traced. We are having very wintery weather and cold north
wind most of the time. I haven't had a hunt for ten days but am going out
tomorrow at Ballyhealy(?) and Wed I am getting the loan of William Bunbury's
horse to hunt with Tats Dennis' hounds, we are going to lunch at Johnston on
Sunday and on to tea at Pollacton(?), both Sophie and Francisca are there
now. Donohue is taking on the farm again for another year at a reduced rent
but I'm lucky to let it at all. with best love, ever your loving Son Jack
2) ? Postmark ? to Mrs. J. O. Adair, c/o Mrs. Berry, Gowrey, Upper
Glenageary, Co. Dublin - Ballynoe 1.12.33 My dearest Muddie, Herewith your
war loan and Miss Lynches rent. I do hope you like the place you are in and
are comfortable. It's an awful day here today but we wanted a change, its
been so bitterly cold all this week. The mare is laid up with a bit of a
cold but I don't think its much. I'm just off to Lisneragh(?) to see if I
can get William Bunbury's horse for tomorrow. We've been having very poor
sport but its been hopeless hunting weather and no scent. We've just had the
drawing room papered and are going to use that for a sitting room and May is
going to keep the Schoolroom as a bedroom, so except for the bathroom we
won't use the top floor at all and it will make it very compact, you ought
to get your income tax rebate any time now. with best love, ever your loving
Son Jack
