4) 20th June 1950 Postmark Hamburg to Mr. C. Walker, 22 Westland Gardens,
Cliftonville, Belfast, N. Ireland - 19.6.50 Dear Campbell, Just a
brief line or two just to let you know that I have had a great holiday here
in Germany. I hope that your own holiday has come up to expectations. The
weather has been perfect, in fact you just couldn't ask for better. Most of
our time has been spent in the Hamburg area, though we have visited such
towns as Stade? & Lubeck & ? today to go to Br? & Cologne to finish up.
Everything is very dear, but the shops are packed full with goods of all
kinds, probably due to this very fact. The cigarette market, the largest of
the post-war markets has fallen completely flat, German cigarettes are
cheaper than British, and the Germans prefer them. I shall probably
see you in a few weeks time, so until I do, look after yourself & all the
very best. Regards to your mother & father. yours sincerely, John

12th May 1954 Postmark Kenya to Mrs. John Walker, 22 Westland Gardens,
Cliftonville, Belfast, Northern Ireland - Sender: Mrs. A. ? Colquhoun, P.O.
Box 108 Nakuru, Kenya - Monday 10th May 1954. My Dear Ella, Ever so
many thanks for your letter & kind wishes to Hugh. We were sorry to hear you
have been poorly, you ought to see a very good specialist, has one cannot
neglect eyes, you certainly have had a packet of trouble too & it must have
been a very anxious time for you all, when Doreen was ill but am very
pleased to hear she is quite better again & hope you too will soon be better
but do see about your eyes Ella that is very important. Hugh is getting on
very well indeed & has a little walk each day & has also driven a shirt
distance in the car but the feeling has not quite come back into his leg &
side but that will take time & is a slow business & requires patience. Ever
so many thanks for you kind offer of your house, but at the moment I am
unable to arrange anything as we have not heard anything definite re our
sailing, we were trying for a boat leaving in June or one leaving in July
but so far have had no word, once I hear then I can arrange things. We will
go to Skegness first so Hugh can have a restful time, as too much talking &
too many people is upsetting for him, as he gets very easily tired & when he
gets his strength back & limbs working properly, we are going to look for a
house somewhere in the country away from noise & people as the Dr. says too
much activity is not good for him, so once again many thanks for your offer
& am hoping I will be able to take advantage of it. You & Cissie have beaten
me with regards to grandchildren as I have still only got the one. Irene,
Dougie & Carolynne are very well, I was speaking to them on the phone last
evening. I ring them up every Sunday night & hear their ? They are living in
Eldout? which is over 100 miles from here so we only see them holiday times,
of course they came down for a few days when Hugh took ill & we were very
glad of their company. We have got a very good manager so will be able
to go home with an easy mind knowing everything will be o.k. while we are
away. We do appreciate your kindness re the house & do hope you will
understand why I cannot say definitely, as it all depends on our sailing &
also how Hugh gets on. Our love to you all & hope you will have a very
enjoyable holiday. Yours Annie

14th January 1957 Postmark Nakuru, Kenya to Mrs. J. Walker, 22 Westland
Gardens, Cliftonville, Belfast, Northern Ireland - P.O. Box 108, Nakuru
14/1/57 My Dear Ella, We were very upset indeed to hear from John
Doreen lost her baby, please do give her our love & best wishes & may she
soon get over it. We were also very sorry to hear you have been very poorly
& do hope you are feeling better now & that you were able to enjoy Xmas. I
intended to write to you before Xmas, but things have not gone very smoothly
for us here, we were without a manager for nearly two months & Margaret had
to carry on all on her own, as Hugh is a very sick man & cannot be left
alone, in fact Ella, it is just a matter of time now. He had an X-ray last
February & the result was cancer, the Dr. told me then, he might live for 6,
12 or 18 months, but just before xmas he had a very bad turn so I had to
tell Irene & Hugh's family, poor dear does not know he has cancer & I do not
want him to know, so if you are writing do not mention it. He had another
bad turn on the 28th Dec. & the Dr. was very doubtful if he would pull
through so I sent for Irene Paul (of course Hugh does not know this, he
thought Paul had just come for a few days visit) but Hugh battled through &
seems to be a little better but we just live from day to day. I do hope you
understand why I haven't written, but felt I just must make an effort now to
let you know, just in case & did not want you to get too bog a shock. I must
write to John & Lis? so will close with our love & best wishes to you all
for 1957. yours Anne

5) 30th December 1963 Postmark Nakuru, Kenya to Mr. & Mrs. J. Walker, 37
Groomsport Road, Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland - P.O. Box 108 Nakuru,
Kenya. 29/12/63 My dear Ella and John, How are you both keeping? I do
hope well. You will probably have a fit getting a letter from me, I know I
am a very bad correspondent and the only person I write to these days is
John, but there it is. Carolynne is out for the holidays she is at school in
England and flew out for Xmas, she has grown into a very big girl and has
left Anne and I far behind, but her father and mother are tall so that
explains it. Sara who is eight is at school at Turi a place about 100 miles
from here poor kid she had measles and mumps at school and is looking very
peeky at the moment but will soon pick up these kinds always do. We went to
Irene's for Xmas day and did enjoy ourselves and they came to tea on Boxing
Day with us. Anne and I are still in this house in Nakuru for how long it
remains to be seen, I must say we would not like to leave as this is a
wonderful climate and a nice place to live in but if this place becomes
impossible we will just have to look elsewhere to live. Irene gave me a
copper bangle to wear for my rheumatism and I must say it has done me a
world of good and my arm is much better. I was thinking of getting a copper
strap for my watch, for my other arm. We have had the most appalling weather
for this time of the year it looks as if the seasons have changed, I put it
down to all these satellites. It rained all Xmas day a thing neither Anne or
I have experienced since we came to Kenya. Now my dears I think I have given
you all the news at the moment, do take care of yourselves, and John do
write soon and let us know how you both are faring, even if I do not write
we do like to hear how you all are. We had a Xmas card from Doreen and
family. Please remember us both to Campbell and family. All the best in the
New Year and the best of good health to you both. Lots of love from us both.
