1) Prayer of a Horse: By order of Acting Police Commissioner Bugher, who as
First Deputy Commissioner has charge of the traffic squads, New York, there
has been posted in every stable and other places where police horses are
kept a neatly printed card bearing this "Prayer of a Horse" :- Police
Department, New York
To thee, my master, I offer my prayer: Feed me, water, and care for me, and
when the day's work is done provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed, and a
stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. Talk to me.
Your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me sometimes,
that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you. Do not
jerk the reins, and do not whip me when going up hill, but let my head down.
Never strike, beat, or kick me when I do not understand what you mean, but
give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your
bidding, see if something is not wrong with my harness or feet.
Examine my teeth when I do not eat. I may have an ulcerated tooth, and
that, you know, is very painful. Keep my feet in good order, and never
allow any one to cut the frogs. Do not pull at my mouth when leading
me, it only hurts and distresses me, and do not overload me at any time. If
I have any sores under my harness, get them healed up well, before you use
me again. Lampas is only an inflamed condition of my palate, and is
due to sudden change in my food, from grass to hay or corn only. Give
me grass, bran, and plenty of water to drink for a few days till my mouth is
well, and do not burn or cut me for it, which is cruel and un-necessary.
Do not tie my head in an unnatural position or take away my best defence
against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my tail or mane. And, finally,
when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze or
sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured and starved to death.
But do thou, my master, take my life in the kindest way and your God will
reward you here and hereafter. ~ James Duffy & Co. Ltd., 38
Westmoreland Street, Dublin
