Seaside traders launch torpedo: Traders went to war yesterday over a plan aimed at changing a resort's seafront. They are opposing proposals to demolish shops and business premises in Bridge Street, Bangor, to allow for a new development overlooking the picturesque Bangor Bay. Yesterday the determined traders had their first face-to-face meeting  with the Mayor of North Down, Alderman Bruce Mulligan and council officers and declared: "We ain't moving."  It was the first time that the group had been able to discuss the radical proposals - revealed last week to councillors - with council officials.  In order to enable development of the High Street gasworks site, council officers had proposed taking over the lower High Street,Bridge Street area to provide a sea view frontage for potential developers. However, traders who would be affected by the scheme, have come out unanimously against the idea and formed their own committee to lobby councillors and the public for support.  Speaking after the meeting, Bill Wolsey - proprietor of a public bar in lower High Street - said that although no firm plans for compulsory purchase had been decided, the traders got the impression that the council officers would press for the vesting of the area if they felt it would be in Bangor's best interests.  "Some of the traders have been in this areas for 50 years," said Mr. Wolsey.  "We have been there for 11 years and have been through some bad times. "But now that we are beginning to see the light, they want to vest out properties. We got the impression that if the mayor felt vesting Bangor Abbey would give developers the go-ahead, then he would push for it."  Mr. Wolsey said that at one time during the discussion it was hinted the majority of the sites could become one big car-park with only certain re-development. "The problem is, that this whole thing has put a blight on our properties and stopped investment entirely. We are in a state of paralysis while it goes on." said Mr. Wolsey. The traders have organised a petition in each of the affected premises.

Article:  "The Road to the Somme" ..... visited him and he gave me a lot of interesting information about the war. I shared the stories with my English class and they loved them. I realised that others would be interested, and so decided to write the book."  Mr Orr advertised in newspapers throughout the Province to contact survivors of the Great War, and interviewed dozens. "It was a tremendous experience talking to them. Their memories were crystal clear," he said. The most striking impression of the Somme and the First World War which emerges in the book is futility attached to it. Philip says: "Most of those I talked to regarded the war as a fatal waste of human life. There was no glory attached to it, and they said they would rather die than go through it again. During his research, Philip also visited museums, libraries and the Public Records Office, and found diaries and letters from soldiers "which hadn't been looked at for years." The Road to the Somme will be on sale at bookshops throughout the Province, priced £9.95.

Martial arts by the sea
: I don't know if people living in Castlerock, near Coleraine, are falling over themselves to join a new club which has just been opened in the resort but if they do join, chances are that they soon will be falling for each other.  No, it's not a lonely hearts club or anything like that, but a karate club which holds training sessions each week in the Presbyterian Church Hall on Main Street. The club is under the expert guidance of instructor Joe McCullagh, who is the holder of a second Dan Black Belt, a very high qualification indeed.  Joe is also the instructor at the University karate Club in Coleraine which over the last four years has produced four black belts and almost 50 brown belts among its students. At Castlerock, club members will be taught the traditional shotokan karate, the original style of karate from which all other styles have developed.  I'm told that although karate is an excellent system of combat and self-defence, and promotes fitness and good health, its ultimate aim is character building.
Wheels in motion: Eight weeks to go until Christmas and already the wheels have been set in motion for the second annual charity swim at Lisfinnan, Co. Donegal. Last year 36 people braved the elements to take a dip for charity on Christmas morning, and Len Ball, one of the organisers of this year's event, is hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. Over £1,000 was raised by the swimmers for charity with the inaugural swim and Len is confident that much more will be raised this year.
