3) Letter Never Sent - In Confidence, 37 Osborne Road, Belfast 9 - To The Commanding Office, 66, Signal Regt. (T.A.) - Sir, As you are aware from our past discussions, I feel that I cannot accept that I should be passed over for the position of second-in-command by an officer to whom I am senior and whom I cannot agree is more suitable than I, and as you have now made known his appointment, I must now terminate my service under your command. Accordingly I request that you accept this letter as my formal application for transfer to the Territorial Army Reserve of Offices. I remain, Sir, your obedient servant. J. B. Kirkpatrick Major (J. B. Kirkpatrick)
4) Resignation Letter (copy) Copy In Confidence. Dear Colonel, With reference to our conversation ? afternoon during which you broke the staggering news about the appointment of a successor to ? McVe??? as second-in-command upon his promotion to Commanding Officer, I would like to confirm, after due consideration that I cannot accept that I should be passed over by ? ? I have had time to reflect on the matter and cannot find that I could carry on under such conditions. I do not wish to end my T.A. service at my early age, especially as I have not known any other relaxation? in my life, and have attended some form of Army Camp at least once per year since the "dark days" of 1944!  Accordingly, as no other officer was mentioned in ? connection as an alternative and under whom I would quite probably have been only too pleased to serve, I feel that I must do all in my power to justify my claim that I am much better suited for the appointment than ? Brooke. Therefore I respectively request that I be granted an interview with the Chief Signal Officer of Northern Ireland Command in order that I may bring my dissatisfaction to his notice.  I would be pleased if this could be arranged prior to your departure for your new appointment, as undoubtedly Major McVicker will wish to make his new appointment as soon as possible after he takes over. I remain you ? ? ? J.?
