M. Henderson - Co-Operative Insurance Society Limited
2a) Labourers' Cottage Charter. tenants' Regulations. Thou shalt
of good character be, To proper keeping of thy cottage see; Neither assign,
sub-let nor sub-divide, Nor allow a lodger with thee abide. Keep thy
premises all in a sanitary state, Let no dirt, or nuisance accumulate, Thy
rent and taxes in due time pay, And thy half-year's rates on appointed day.
Thy land well manure and keep free from weeds, Use nothing but the best of
seeds; Thy plot well till, but plant no trees, To shelter thee from the
stormy breeze, Or spoil the view of thy neighbours near, Who sometimes want
to both see and hear. Thy woodwork paint and hedges trim, For
delapidation, it is a sin. Neither out-house build, not erect a shed,
And, if single, hasten to church to wed, for preference is given to married
man, Against bachelors, is the Council's ban. If no pump is near, take
spirits neat, For carrying water will wear thy feet, Better use oil stoves,
for smoke, 'tis said, And soot will make thee see things red. To thy
adjacent tenant be always civil, Let him be either saint or di ==l.
A cottage for a labourer is thought a boon, But, alas! his end will come too
soon; No ordinary man of Irish birth, Was ever born on this wide earth, Who
could to such drastic rules agree, And, a few years hence, he'll be R.I.P.
2b) on the back, part article - ... ponent added that after arrest,
Wallace told him he would show him where the stuff was and accompanied him
to the railway hut in the townland of Leggygowan where witness found the
missing articles. James Leeson gave evidence of finding the store
broken into and a large quantity of stuff missing. He identified the
articles produces as belonging to the Co-Operative Society. Constable
Whiteford, a new witness, made a deposition stating that he was on duty in
the townland of Cumber on the 17th April. As a result of certain
information he went to a field belonging to Edward Corry and found the
following articles - two new pair boots, three pair military putties, one
watch holder bearing the name "Vincent Murray" printed on it, a quantity of
tea, sugar and butter, some empty salmon tins and cigarette boxes. An
officer of the Battalion, who was in attendance, said that the military
authorities were not prepared to accept responsibility for the men's
appearance at the Court, consequently they were returned for trial in
custody to Downpatrick Sessions on the 14th June. A consent to bail,
though, was signed. Accused were also charged before Mr. H. P.
Fishbourne, J.P., with breaking and entering the garage and confectionery
shop of Vincent Murray, Dundrum, on the night of the 14th, or morning of ...
(sorry that's all)
3) In Loving Memory - In Affectionate Remembrance of Sarah Hamilton, aged 30
years also Lizzie Hamilton, aged 34 years. Who departed this life November
25th 1918, and were interred at Killyman Cemetery, November 27th. Many
a lonely hour, Many a sleepless night, Do we think of our dear ones, In
their heavenly home so bright. None knew how sad the parting, Nor what
the farewell cost; But God and His bright angels, Have gained what we have
lost.
