Cleanliness - An old proverb says it is next
to Godliness. On a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks ago two
teenage girls, Patricia McFarland and Wilma Nicholson, arrived
at the Rectory and asked for the key of the hall. They spent the
whole afternoon there and tidied and washed out the china
cupboard, then cleaned the gas stove, and finished up by washing
the floor. And now, reinforced by Maureen Irvine, they want to
come back and do the walls and floor of the main hall. With that
sort of spirit they should make very good wives at a later date
for some lucky young men.
Congratulations - These are offered to our
eighteen-year-old parishioner, Raymond Jordan, on his many
successes in bakery competitions.

Obituaries - A few weeks before Christmas our People's
Church-warden, Mr. Joe Turner, brought his widowed mother home
to live with him. she had been all her life a worker and example
in the parish of Lambeg, and we looked forward to having her
with us when she was unable to go as far as her old parish
church. Sadly for the Turner family and all her many friends she
became seriously ill and died. Her mortal remains were laid to
rest on Christmas Eve in Lambeg Churchyard. Her delight was
unbounded when her only son was elected people's churchwarden.
To him and the whole family connection we give our sympathy. On Sunday, 5th January, Mr. Hubert Mack passed to his
reward at the age of 86. He had been a wonderful friend to St.
Colman's, and had held every office in the parish open to a lay
man. His advice and help were greatly valued on the Select
Vestry, until he had to retire some years ago for health
reasons. He gave to our Church the Communion Table and Eagle
Lectern, and also paid for the robing of the church choir. Right
up to the end of his earthly life one of his first interests was
his church. we would pay tribute to his housekeeper, Miss
Larmour, for the way in which she looked after him, and to her
and his niece and grand-nephews we extend our prayers.

all concerned that they may soon find suitable employment in as
pleasant surroundings and not too far to travel.

In Memoriam -
It was while we were all busy with the
preparations for Christmas that Mrs. Elizabeth Turner passed
quietly and quickly away, and was laid to rest on Christmas Eve.
Only a few weeks before when she was the recipient of a gif from
the M.U. and Women's Bible Class, she seemed full of energy and
her usual cheerful spirits. Exceptionally well-known and loved
by the parishioners of Lambeg, she will be greatly missed,
especially in the Mothers' Union and Women's Bible Class, where
she was a real pillar of strength and an inspiration and example
to all. As a regular worshipper and communicant, her place in
Church at the Lord's Table was never vacant, except for some
unavoidable reason. In earlier life she gave devoted service as
a choir member and S.S. teacher, and at all times showed a
spirit of Christian friendliness and helpfulness, which made it
a pleasure to work with her. We thank God for her life and for
the faith, hope and love which she showed, for her great
influence amongst us, and we remember with prayerful sympathy
her devoted son and daughter-in-law and all the family circle in
their great sorrow and loss.

Best Wishes to Miss Vivien Sterling, on her
engagement to Mr. Leonard Crawford
When the curate-in-charge, seated at the
fire-side, opened the box to remove questions and hymn requests,
one slip of paper disappeared up the chimney. He offers his
apology to the person concerned and suggests that if a question
remains unanswered, the person concerned should approach him
personally. If Father Christmas has found it among the many
other letters he receives from chimneys, it may turn up in
someone's stocking at Christmas!

Called to Higher Service - There are no names in our register this month, but none the less
we mourn the death in Scotland of Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth
(Elsie) McAree, who resided at "Springfield," Innellan,
Argyllshire. Prior to her marriage in 1935 |Miss Elsie Bruce, as
she then was, was a tower of strength in this parish - a leading
member of the church choir, a Sunday School teacher, and a
stalwart of the Dunmurry branch of the Girls' Friendly Society.
She was also secretary of the Workshops for the Blind. We well
remember the comic song she composed and sang at the social
evening organised to welcome the new curate-in-charge to
Dunmurry in 1932. She died very suddenly in Stirling on 29th
July, making ready to come over to visit her sister Laura here
in Dunmurry. And to Miss Laura Bruce and her niece Betty we give
our heartfelt sympathy. The same sympathy goes out to Mr. Don Neill on the sudden death
of his young wife Ena. When the news came through it cast a deep
shadow on the whole of our community, and expressions of sorrow
could be heard on every side. Mr. and Mrs. Neill were members of
Dunmurry Presbyterian Church, and they had many friends in St.
Colman's and other churches as well. May the God of all grace
give Don comfort and strength in his irreparable loss.

1963 - 1965. Called to Higher Service 17th July 1965 - It is
difficult to give articulate expression to the sense of grief
which is still deeply felt throughout the whole parish following
the death of Charlie Harbinson as a result of an unfortunate and
tragic accident. It seems hard to believe that his happy
presence is no longer among us here below. We assure Mrs. Sheila
Harbinson, Evelyn and Edmund of our deepest sympathy in the
great bereavement and loss they have been called upon to suffer.
To his parents and the Harbinson family at home and abroad, and
to Mr. and Mrs. T. Moore and family we extend the same assurance
of our sympathy. St. G. C. H. Lundy

Burial of the Dead - September 25 - Clara E. Stewart, Maze
In Memoriam. It is with deep regret that we
record the death, while on holiday, of Clara E. Stewart. A keen
and loyal church-woman, Miss Stewart had given long service to
the Church of Ireland. While nursing in Purdysburn she was for
over 20 years a member of the Select Vestry of Drumbo Parish.
She taught in Maze S.S. and deeply loved our church of St.
Matthew's, Broomhedge. This is evidenced by the fact that, along
with her brother, she presented the new Holy Table and Communion
Rails. We thank God for the work and witness of such a devoted
servant.

The passing of David Dempster marks the end of
an era. We shall not see his like again. He loved people and had
no enemies. He took pride in his work. His most precious
possessions were his sythe, bill-hook, shears and clippers.
Beneath a rugged face there was a happy smile, gentleness,
patience and a refinement which spoke of bygone days.

Romance. We were delighted when we heard that
two members of our Church Choir, Mr. Ernest Brown and Miss
Rosemary Hutchinson, had become engaged to be married. This gave
us all the more pleasure because we had the honour of baptising
them both, preparing them for confirmation, teaching them and
having them as teachers in Sunday School as well as being choir
members. All their many friends in St. Colman's wish them every
happiness and blessing.
Golden Wedding. While we congratulate Ernest and
Rosemary, we also no less given Christian greeting to our
friends Captain and Mrs. Remes on the occasion of their 50th
wedding anniversary. They were married on the 22nd November,
1915, during the dark days of the first world war. It was indeed
a great privilege to join with them at Holy Communion on their
Golden Wedding Day.
