5) Late Mrs. Annie McNamee - The death took place recently of Mrs. Annie
McNamee, Calverstown P.O., Kilcullen, at St. Vincent's Hospital, Athy. Born
in 1899, she was formerly Annie (Josie) Doyle, Calverstown Lodge. A lady of
quiet and charitable disposition, she was held in high esteem by all who
knew her. Most of her life was spent helping and dealing with the public. As
a young girl she went to England and trained as a nurse at Liverpool's Royal
Infirmary Hospital. For the next 20 years as casualty sister she nursed the
sick and wounded in war torn Britain. Returning home in 1943, she married
John McNamee and settled down to life on the farm. During those years her
advice and help was often sought on medical matters which she readily
rendered. In 1959 she became postmistress of Calverstown P.O. The great love
of her life was serving the public from behind her post office counter. A
task she carried out diligently until she became incapacitated through
injury two years ago. Her remains were received at Crookstown church by Fr.
M. O'Connor, P.P. The funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. P. Kinsella, P.P.,
Greystones (cousin), assisted by Fr. O'Connor and Fr. Corcoran, C.C.,
Kilmeade. Among the large attendance at removal of the remains and
burial were Minister of Finance, Mr. Alan Dukes and Deputies Bernard Durkan,
Charlie McCreevy; Councillors Patsy Lawlor, Michael McWey, Pat Hyland, Mr.
Richie Ryan, M.E.P., and representatives from political, sporting and rural
organisations, and Post Office and County Council staffs. She was
predeceased by her husband by twenty years. She is survived by her son,
Tony; daughter-in-law, Mary; grandchildren, John, Anthony, Colm and Kevin;
brother, Paddy (Greystones); sisters, Mrs. Teresa O'Neill (Dunlavin); Mrs.
Stefie Lawlor (Bray); Mrs. Mizie McGrath (England); sister-in-law, Maureen
Doyle, nephews, nieces and other relatives.
