4) Strahan - Dows. A Brilliant Wedding on Fifty-third Street last
night - Not least among the notable weddings of the season was that which
was celebrated last evening at the residence of John H. Strahan, No. 15 East
Fifty-third street, when his only daughter, Grant Strahan, was married to
Mr. David Dows, Jr. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Dr. Taylor,
rector of the Broadway Tabernacle, corner of Sixth avenue and Thirty-fourth
street. The house was very beautifully decorated throughout with rare
flowers and exotics, pure white roses and smilax being festooned along the
railing of the staircase and hothouse plants in vases lining the wall. The
ceremony took place at 8 p.m., the bride being given away by her father.
There were four bridesmaids, the Misses Dows, Adams, Laffin and Bowman, all
schoolmates of Miss Strahan. The best man was C. L. Walters of Baltimore. A
reception followed, which continued until 11 o'clock. The house was crowded
with guests and a long line of waiting carriages extended nearly to Fourth
avenue. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs. David Dows, the parents
of the groom; Mr. and Mrs. William Belden, of Syracuse; John H. Mooney and
wife, ex-Comptroller Andrew H. Green, Miss Adams, Miss Brewster, Mrs. Watt,
an aunt of the bride, from London, Eng.; Robert Strahan of Edinburgh,
Scotland; Mr. and Mrs. Blakesley, Dr. C. H. and Mrs. Goodwin, and others. In
an upper room were displayed the presents, which were both numerous and
costly.
