Thank you for presenting the information in such a useful way. I have found several references to family members in it. Primarily Wakefield Haughton Dixon (Snr and Jnr), of Belfast. I am trying to pinpoint his father, who I believe came from Shropshire in the UK. Certainly Wakefield married in Shrewsbury, but was born in Ireland.

Thank you for this most interesting website, my family has a long standing presence in Knox, Scotshouse Co. Monaghan. I am looking for more information that predates what has already been researched about the Family of John McDonald of Knox Scots house. I will continue to use your site for my research. He is said to have come from Scotland about 1799 so I am looking for information about him.

Thanks for doing the site. I have found it useful in tracing the Irish side of my family.

My father was born in Cambrai St, Belfast in 1915. Both my grandparents were living in Whiteabbey before that, one side G. Grandfather Alexander Finlay , a bleacher with the Whiteabbey bleaching company, was from Belfast. I'm interested in tracing the Finlays and McCanns in Belfast, before 1877. My Gt Gt grandfathers were a Thomas Finlay (labourer) and Robert McCann a bleacher. Alexander F was living at Broadway, Falls Road, when he married Margaret McCann in 1877.

I'm happy to correspond and share info with anyone researching the same line. I am in the London area and have access to London archives and records.

Roberts father was Hans and possibly married to Sarah? All lived in that area.
When Robert died, Isabella married Thomas Coburn and had 2 sons Samuel and David and perhaps more.

I'm a granddaughter of Henry McKee, Derryogue, Kilkeel. He went to New Zealand to farm in 1914 (just before the outbreak of WW1). His family was to follow soon after but were not able to because of the war. They eventually got to NZ in 1920 on the Athenic. Sadly, Henry died in 1922, leaving a widow and four children.
My father was Harry, the eldest; the others were Don, Eleanor, and Ernest. Eleanor, the last to die, died only this year. They used to love remembering their early childhood in Ireland. I have written down a lot of those early memories.

you have solved a family mystery! My great grandfather and great grand aunt seemingly lived at either 122 Castlereagh Road or 122 Ellenborough Terrace.

I found that Ellenborough Terrace is/was a terrace on Castlereagh Road so both addresses are for the same house!

I think my family must have lived there much later than 1907 - certainly Martha Morton aka Dobson was there in 1920 and her brother John Cosgrove died there in 1921.

I'm looking forward to exploring your fascinating site! So far, I was delighted to discover the 1819 Belfast directory, even though I can't find anyone I can be certain is an ancestor... I'm trying to find the parents & other family of JOHN BRUCE (born about 1805 in I'm pretty sure, County Antrim) and his wife MARGARET LOWRY (born about 1810) who emigrated to the US (Baltimore) about 1833. He was a stone mason in Maryland, and a member of the Baptist Church, but I'm still struggling to find out something about their earlier days in Ireland.

Excellent discovery - My Grandparents (Sarah and Tom Ferguson) lived at No. 22 Sevastopol Street up until the early 1950s. When my parents Phyllis & Hugh Ferguson took over the residence at No 22 Sevastopol St.

From my early childhood memories I can recall the surnames of some long term residents (and their descendants) of Sevastopol St, those are the names dating back to the era of 1907 you have listed ie. Joyce and Crossey who lived at numbers 38 and 40 respectively.

I lived there from 1955 to 1976 when I emigrated to Australia.

I worked in the post office in Belfast for many years starting as a telegram boy. Whilst going through the street directories it brought back lots of memories of streets with half-doors, houses up entries, they are long since gone. I wish that I had photographed these sights of Old Belfast. My ancestors lived in Round entry and that neighbourhood in 1820s, They were born, baptised and married there and St. Patrick's  R.C. Donegal Street. My grandfather and his brother both died 1918, WW1. In the space of 10 years, my grandfather lost his mother,3 sisters,1 brother, a son and daughter and 2 nephews, all from 9, Fort Street. Thank you for your wonderful, informative site. I have only recently discovered that my g-g-g-grandfather, Robert McMullen, came from Magherafelt. He arrived in Canada circa 1818, secured a large parcel of land just south of Ottawa, Ontario in Oxford-on-Rideau and may have returned to Ireland to marry, since he and his young family arrived to occupy the land several years later. He served in His Majesty's 47th Regiment of Foot, but I know virtually nothing yet of his life or the family prior to their arrival in Canada.

Anyway, I now look forward to continuing my search...

Thanks again,
Paddy McMullen Erwin

Thanks on behalf of the many thousands who have gleaned important information from it.

H confused elp! I desperately need some help in finding details about 'Forthill, Groomsport, Co. Down'. My family have had a small cottage there for 45 years. Property developers are trying to get us out - they are also completely destroying the area! My sister once saw an ancient map which referred to the hill our cottage came from as 'Forthill'. I think there may have been an old fort there. I can't find any info online - can anyone give me some help/ideas?

I have a marriage for JAMES WILEY and MARIA NICHOLL, in 1851, at Newtonhamilton. James and Maria were my ggg grandparents. Their son, Joseph, was my gg grandfather. The family moved over here to Scotland where they had the remainder of their family. I have enjoyed having a look at your site, and will do so again, in more detail, later.

Most people never give a thought as to how this book was compiled and I am sure there are not too many of us around. I found streets in Belfast I did not know existed. I have just found my great grandmother in Whiteabbey listed . She came from a townland near Ballymena called Kirkinriolia!
