2) 6th May 1918  Infantry Record Office Island Bridge, Dublin - Sir, I regret to have to inform you that a report has this day been received from the War Office to the effect that (No.) 18/1505  (Rank) Rfn.  (Name) Robt. Milliken  (Regiment) 12th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles was *posted as "missing" after the engagement at The Front on the 26/3/18.  Should he subsequently rejoin, or any other information be received concerning him, such information will be at once communicated to you. I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, Wm. Cooney? to Mr. Wm. Milliken, Divis Street, Carrickfergus - The report that he is missing does not necessarily mean that he has been killed, as he may be a prisoner of war or temporarily separated from his regiment.  Official reports that men are prisoners of war take some time to reach this country, and if he has been captured by the enemy it is probable that unofficial news will reach you first. In that case, I am to ask you to forward any letter received at once to this Office, and it will be returned to you as soon as possible.   4th September 1928 War Badge awarded to William Milligan late No. WR 310892 Inland Waterways & Docks R.E. for "Services Rendered" in H.M.'s Military Forces since 4th August 1914. 2) Death of Mr. S. Millikin.  Well-Known E. Antrim Resident - The death took place somewhat suddenly, on Tuesday, following a heart attack, of Mr. Samuel Millikin, at his residence, Scout Bush, Carrickfergus.  The deceased gentleman, who was a well-known farmer and successful cattle dealer, was in his sixty-third year, and was held in great esteem by a wide circle of friends. Deep sympathy will be extended to his widow and five sons, the eldest of whom is the popular sprinter, Mr. J. S. Millikin, a director and Ulster representative of Messrs. J. Bamber & Co., wholesale boot and leather merchants. The eldest son of Mr. Millikin, Lieut. James Millikin, served with the Royal Irish Rifles (attached Royal Air Force) in the great war, and lost his life as the result of an aeroplane accident shortly after the Armistice.  A brother of deceased, Mr. James Millikin, has been for a long time connected with the head office of the Northern Banking Co. Ltd.  Of his sisters, one is the wife of Mr. Andrew Alexander, superintendent of rates, Belfast Corporation; another is the widow of Mr. James Alexander, solicitor; and the third is wife of Mr. William J. Ferguson, "Oakmount," Holestone, Doagh.  The late Mr. S. Millikin always manifested a great interest in healthy outdoor sport and was for a long period closely associated with the East Antrim Harriers.  In politics he was a strong Unionist. He was a member of the Joymount Presbyterian Church; and as a Freemason was P.M.? of Straid Lodge, 276.   -   Part article .. personality, charm and friendliness. Mrs. J. W. 1) 9th May, 1940  The British Weekly  Ireland PRESBYTERIAN: Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Henry, Portstewart, on celebrating their golden wedding, received messages of congratulation from his Grace the Governor and Viscount Craigavon. Mr. Henry is a member of kirk session in Portstewart Church and has been largely responsible for the development of the town from a modest fishing village to one of the most popular seaside resorts in Ulster.  In Fisherwick Church, a memorial window, the gift of the Bulloch family, was dedicated by Rev. Dr. John Waddell, in memory of the late Mr. Alexander Bulloch, J.P.  The family was not represented owing to the news just received that Flight-Lieutenant Anthony Bulloch, son of Mr. John L. Bulloch, was missing.  The kirk session of Rosemary Street Church, Belfast, entertained Rev. G. D. Erskine, B.D., and Mrs. Erskine, to a complimentary luncheon in the war memorial hostel, to mark their silver wedding and the completion of Mr. Erskine's ten years' ministry in Rosemary Street.  A troop flag, given by an anonymous donor to 1st Bangor Scout Group, in memory of assistant scout-master Stewart Templeton, was dedicated by Rev. W. G. Wimperis at a service in Trinity Church, Bangor. Mr. Templeton was the victim of a black-out cycling accident last January.  DEATHS - Mr. J. K. Christie, Knockbreda Park, a valued member of Newtownbreda Church and a generous contributor to its funds -- Mr. A. J. W. Christie, J.P., of Portrush congregation. -- Mrs. W. J. Holley, Portstewart, had a life-long connection with New Row, Coleraine. -- Mr. Robert Fulton, a member of kirk session and superintendent of Sabbath school in Dunluce. -- Major S. M. Kinghan, youngest son of the late Rev. John Kinghan, and grandson of the late Rev. Richard Dill. His father was founder of the Kinghan Mission for the Deaf and Dumb, of which Major Kingham was co-convener. He was connected latterly with Belmont congregation.  METHODIST: Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Gordon, Londonderry, celebrated their golden wedding on 29th ult. Mr. Gordon was responsible for the organisation of the local branch of the U.S.P.C.C., and has been its hon. secretary for 45 years. The family are prominent members of the church in Londonderry. -- Miss Sheila Hunter, daughter of Rev. Johnstone Hunter, of Dublin, was married at Clontarf Church to Dr. Allan T. M. Roberts, M.R.C.P.  DEATHS - Mr. Herbert G. Stevenson, M.B.E., Belfast, for many years associated with the Ministry of Pensions and Ministry of Labour. He was president of the ladies' choir in Ballynafeigh Church, where he worshipped.
2) Farmers Hunt "Vampire" Sheep Killer by Sunday Dispatch Reporter - Organised parties with shotguns are patrolling the rich pasturelands of South Galway all night long to track down a mystery sheep-killer.  Farmers are so perturbed at the number of sheep they find dead or dying, all with the same peculiar wounds, that some believe a vampire bat is responsible. The menace was first discovered by James Burke and John Coleman, of Peterswell, who went out as usual on Thursday morning to herd and count their flocks. They found large numbers of the sheep dead or dying. A thin strip of skin was torn from the skull, and on top of the skull was a deep perforation. The wounds on all the sheep were identical, and today 50 of them, valued at £100, are dead. A peculiarity is that no other marks have been made on the bodies of the sheep. Dogs are ruled out, as they go at the throat, and if the killing agency was human the sheep would have been taken away. At first it was thought a golden eagle was responsible, but when the murderous assailant struck again on Thursday night the now frightened farming community began to think of vampire bats.  Blood Sucker.  They say that whether it is beast or bird it is undoubtedly a blood-sucker, and only strikes in hours of darkness. When I visited the area yesterday evening I found them organising partied armed with shotguns to patrol the grasslands where the sheep were grazing. I went with one of the parties and, led by two youths holding torches of flaming pine, we set out to patrol a farm of 60 acres on which 600 sheep were grazing. Mile after mile we walked until 2 a.m., when we sat down to eat our sandwiches. It was at exactly 3.50 a.m. - I had just looked at my watch - that death struck again. We were at the corner of a six-acre field and were just about to cross it when we heard a whirr of wings and a high-pitched shriek as if some giant albatross were passing over. Guns blazed into the darkness, but when we got to the end of the field yet another sheep lay dead with the same peculiar injuries as before. But that is not all. When morning came 20 more sheep were found dead.  (sorry the article in unfinished)
