To The Public
~~~~~~~
The great and important improvements made by our active and judicious Police, since the first arrangement of the Belfast Directory, though they have somewhat retarded the publication, highly tend to promote its utility....the names of several streets having been changed, some new ones projected, and the numbers entirely altered, required as strict inspection as on its first compilation.
We expect its present form will be found convenient and in general correct.....comprising such improvements and alterations as have taken place since the first of February.
In every department we have invariably attended to alphabetical order.....in that of the Mercantile and Trading, we were in some instances at a loss to discriminate and affix the appropriate title of business, according to the person's being less or more extensive in trade.....conscious of impartial intention, we hope to be excused for any such error, and shall gladly receive any hint that may tend to obviate future objections.
We have also given a list of the professional Gentlemen, and the principal public Institutions, etc. of the town, alphabetically arranged.
The following are the principal alterations, etc.
Cow-lane, now Mary Street
Fore-plantation, James' Street
Buttler's-row, Gordon Street
Back-plantation, Grattan Street
Hercules-lane, Hercules Street
Back-of-the-River, Back Lane
South Parade, Donegall Square
from the head of Donegall Street past the Barracks, Queen Street
from the Bridge-end to the Custom House Corner, Custom House Quay
**We, in the most earnest manner, request that any removals or alterations, during the year, may be notified to us, prior to the 10th November next.
