Hi there, was told about this site particularly the Biddy Taylor page. Biddy was my father's first cousin and there are pictures of Biddy's mother and my father's mother (my granny obviously!) swimming in Portrush harbour. Where did the information come from? I remember Mossy the horse very well, he lived to the great old age of 29 I think it was!

But I may be able to help, as I am trying to put together a story on Captain Patrick C Masterson (he of the fench eagle), and find out what happened to Ensign Koegh (Kough), where he was buried and where he came from.
Be great if you can give me a few pointers, regards Tim.

Have a suitcase belonging to my deceased father, A J Andews 5121773. He was known as Jimmy rather than Arthur.
Searched for his regiment and found this wonderful website.
Used his release certificate as a starting point. There are lots of photographs from his India and Burma spell of duty.
How do I find out about any medals he may have had?
Any help would be much appreciated. A Happy New Year to you all and good look with your researching!

Delighted to find your website. I found reference to Samuel May on the Memorial in Garvagh. He was my husband's great Uncle who had moved to Canada in 1910. In 1918 he,with his wife and daughter, moved to Cedar Falls,Washington. I have been doing family research and have found that he died in 1985 at the age of 92. He was the youngest son of Robert May. My husband's grandfather,John, was the 6th of 9 children Robert and Ellen Sarah had and he moved to S.Rhodesia around the time of the 2nd Boer War.
We visited Ireland and Garvagh for the first time in Sept this year and saw the Memorial. My husband was delighted to visit the home of his forefathers. Has anyone any further information about the Mays of Garvagh/Bellury and the McCookes who seem to be related.

Does anyone know the name or whereabouts of J.C.K., the writer of the poem "Indian Twilight" on this site.
We met in a village called Comilla in India during WW II. He was in the Army and i was in the R.A.F.
I remember that we sat together whilst we refined his poem.
I still have a copy of it as it was then.
A memory of "ships that pass in the night", and it would be wonderful to make contact with him after all these years.

Your web site has been invaluable to me in finding my grandfathers family in Belfast and I really appreciate all your hard and enduring work. A labour of love. Thank You.

Would like to point out a slight information error in your WW1 Section under Fitzroy Presbyterian Church. Service and Sacrifice, Three Belfast Congregations. The great work done by Nigel Henderson list personal information on a solider named Samuel Hayes, Service # 10/14867. His PreWar Addresses have been identified as 5 Jerusalem (1901) and 23 Hatfield (1909). The 5 Jerusalem address was not the home of this solider Samuel Hayes but that of my grandfather, his sister and his father as shown in the 1901 Irish Census Records. Going by the second address, 23 Hatfield, in the 1911 Irish Census this Solider Samuel Hayes does appear at that address with his mother Agnes and stepfather Charles Collins. Taking a second look at the 1901 Irish Census, you will actually find Solider Samuel Hayes living with his mother (and same listing of brothers and sisters) at 169 Vernon St. Belfast.

This has been a fun little family research project for me today in thinking that my Grandfather had 2 half brothers and 2 half sisters that he never told us about. His father was actually widowed about 1882 and never remarried.

Excellent reading. Found my grandfather and great uncle on roll of honour, Henry and Joseph Hamilton, from Portstewart. They both fought at the Somme, my grandfather was approx. 21yrs. He was wounded twice and returned to The Front. Near the end of the war he was taken prisoner. They returned from the Great War and suffered ill health the rest of their lives due to gas at the front, the two of them died on the same day, my grandfather was 48 he had went on to be the station master at Magilligan station and father ten children! The youngest being 3 when he died.

Can anyone help with any detail about a Ralph Orridge/Orredge who ran a glass cutting business in Smithfield in 1819. It appears to have been taken over by his wife Frances Orrige in 1824 according to the Street Directories. Their daughter Hanna/Anna married George Morris (Born 1806) (my great great grandfather) who came from Newcastle upon Tyne to work for Orridge and had a glass cutting business on the Shankill Road later after 1857.

Lovely site, thank you, Could anyone help me. I am trying to find if there are any COCHRAN(E)'S around related to HUGH HALL COCHRAN(E) born about 1805, but not sure if it was in Armagh or area, or Renfrewshire, Scotland.
HUGH HALL COCHRAN(E) was a watch and clock maker, who lived in LURGAN in the later 1800s He married a Margaret Belshaw, and had a number of children. one or two became watch and clock makers themselves.
What I would love to know, but don't know how to find them, is who were HUGH HALL COCHRAN(E)'S parents. baptisms didn't become registered until about 1864, and as he was born in about 1805 it is difficult to find his parents.

Is anyone else researching this particular Cochran(e) family and do you have more information than me to share.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Heather

I had made the assumtion that he had served with 8HAA but ur superb site leads me to look elsewhere.
In exploring your site I came upon the Love family of Downpatrick, a town where I went to school.
To lose 1 son to the Boer war must have been terrible for the family but how did the parents deal with the loss of 4 more in the Great War
It's a very sad story and not one that I was aware off growing up in Northern Ireland.
