McGifford McGiffert
Hi ,
My name that I am having a difficult time in locating stems from the lower Ards and around the Strang Lough upwards to Killyleag including Portaferry and Downpatrick and Saul.
The man was James McGiffert and his wife was Mary Carson. He was born around the 1810 timeframe and was classed as a ploughman on some estate. He had eleven children according to an obituary of one of his sons [ William ] from Ohio. My line stems from another son Arthur who married one Margaret O,Hara from Belfast [ Shankill ] area.
There must be records of deaths someplace. His death seems to have occured around 1860 give or take several years.
This reasoning is from a certificate from another of his sons who immigrated to Scotland and on his death certificate it shows his father as being diseased in 1863. But an earlier certificate showed him as being an estate worker.
Not sure if this means anything.
The question...
How would I go about locating the death of this James McGiffert and or Mary Carson.
Or his marriage for that matter. Something to help in proving the name of his father.
Anything will probably help as I have nothing to go on.
Thanks.

Hi Redwillow

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a lead.

For my tuppence worth...

You probably already know that official registration for births began in 1864, before that there are few places you could find the information.

If he was a regular churchgoer it is possible (but not always so) that his burial was recorded in the church records.

The other is if he was lucky enough to have a notice or mention in the local paper - unfortunately here I can find no local paper for the area for that time frame (all started after the early 1870s)

Maybe  Lennon/Wylie can find a reference in the Directories.

You don't mention the death date for his wife...

Hello Redwillow
have you had a look at the http://web.archive.org/web/20070526200610/http://www.caora.net/ site ?
there's a link on there to the Ros Davies site (youll find it under the heading of DOWN on the top bar i can't post the actual link at the moment as my key board is playing up and i cant get the squiggley line to work )
Anyhow on there is a surnames list and McGifford/Mcgiffert figures quite a bit so prehaps worth a look if you haven't already.
Kind regards
Meg

Slaters 1846
checked Newtownards, Killyleagh
Portaferry only thing close is

Milliners & Dressmakers
McGifford, Isabella, Portaferry (she's also listed in the 1861 online)

sorry nothing else even remotely close, I used the Ulster Covenant as a guide to that area and checked any that were listed in the Index.

Thanks all for the info ,
I guess I should have notified as to what I have already done in regards to my research.
Yes , I have been to CAORA and Davis as well as almost every site that mentions Ireland. Like looking for the small stone in a feild of small stones. They are all there but which one is the right one.
I have a copy of all deaths , marriages and births of every McGiffert / McGifford and their variables from the Mormon Library film records which shows all from 1863 onward to 1920 something. I have a group of gravestones which mention several McGifford families but does not mention the James or Mary Carson I need. Unfortunately I do not know the exact dates of their demise , only that James was gone by 1863. Not much to go on. I am wondering if he may have gone to scotland to be with the several of the family who emmigrated there. But Scotlands people do not have any record of this.
But then if he did go their in his old age and was not ever shown on any record he would still be listed as a death. Or would he. Was there private burials on private land that was secret from the government eyes?
Not likely but I am grasping at straws.
It is my assumption that he was an employee on either the Montgomery estate or a close proximity. Methinks maybe there could be records from these estate s in PRONI. Could this be?
The surname shows up on Valuation records going back to the mid 1700 era in this area and not elseware.
There is an Australian site that also mentions the McGifford family but as usual they only mention ''from Ireland" in the place of birth.
There was a John McGiffert from Killyleagh who was deeply involved in McGiffert genealogy...? He died three years ago willing his papers to PRONI The McGiffert Letters , A group of thirty letters written to the McGiffert family who owned a plantation in Alabama. I have a copy of these and they in themselves do show a couple of the families and relatives. The only problem with these letters is that they do not show who is who..just cousin this and cousin that. Portaferry is where this family originated and the milner was the sister to the James who went to America in 1819, There were two other sisters who opened a hotel for women in Belfast.
Dr McGiffert is listed as an uncle. All I need to do is find ..WALDO..

If anyone from the KILLYLEAGH area ever gets to the main library I wonder if you could inquire for me as to the whereabouts of the main family genealogy that this 'John McGiffert ' had so extensivly done. It appears that he did not deposit this aspect of his papers into PRONI.
I have written to the library but did not ever receive a reply.
This could answer me questions. Maybe the road has indeed reached an end with no further truth or proof.
Thanks again all for your intrest

A check of PRONI shows quite a number of "Montgomery papers" but not much detail. A phone call should clarify if they might have what you are looking for.

As you seem to have covered most of the bases already, have you tried contacting the local paper and seeing if they will put in a notice in asking if anyone has any information on John McGiffert and/or his history files. Maybe if he was married there might be an in-law or two.

I emailed Killyleagh today, if they don't answer by Wednesday morning, I'll ring them and kick some hiney, only kidding but I'd like to know why they plaster their email all over the internet and don't answer it, even if they answer mine, there's no excuse for not answering your letter.

Hopefully they'll get back to me and then we can see what they have, I fancy a wee toot to Killyleagh, no ferry though, uhuh no way, me and water, in a bath only with bubbles...will let you know what happens.

Hi all ,
Still winter here in Canada this morning. 50 mph winds blowing from the n w but nothing like the three feet of snow just south of us. A nice day to go over the genealogy I have and don,t have.
Did not have much luck with Killyleagh and  Lennon/Wylie taking the time to go for me. A great horaaaaaw to her for being so kind.
But then,,,,if this great hobby was to easy nobody would be at it. Everyone would be done , so I guess a few dire moments are woth it as it gives one the attitude to do further searching through history , publications of news events and lets one know and understand the lifestyles portrayed by such events and why these people did as they did.
Thanks again  Lennon/Wylie and everyone else who showed an intrest in my search.

I don't know who was more disappointed

The info at Killyleagh is fine if you're looking for marriages and baptisms as its photocopies of church entries but for what we were hoping to find, personal research or family trees by John McGiffert, unfortunately there were none, still, the only way is up (famous words by Yazz)

I think Killyleagh should have those records online....they would be invaluable to many people.

Hi all ,
Now there is a brilliant idea. As I was led to beleive there is a family historical group centered at the Killyleagh Library. Maybe all one needs to do is put a bee in their bonnets and see what happens. Those records would indeed be invaluable to others seeking ancesters within that area.
Some year we are going to huff and puff and finally save enough for an Irish vacation. Not sure when though. In the realm of life genealogy is far from number one in the need to do bracket. But one can hope.
We have on word the on line history of Ireland with no punches witheld concerning what England was about and the deliberate hardship they placed upon the people of Ireland/Ulster in the name of profit for arrogant and greedy landlords. Really good read. It is under ' Gutenberg e books ' if anyone be interested. Free to download at will.
We are getting well informed on the plantation period as well and are still searching for the surname McGifford which is a branch of the Giffard family who came to England with William the Conqueror and fought in the battle of hastings and as a reward ware granted confiscated lands in various areas of Britian. The Low Land Scots area was one of the areas though the name is not that prominent and seems to have died out in the sixteen hundreds with the last being two daughters . So it is baffling to say the least when t it is stated in the plantation of Ulster within Down , one of the names is McGifford , from Scotland [ low land scots ]
Methinks that somewhere there is a Baillie connection . Ringdufferin. This seems to be the area where the Baillies did get land and began the draining of the bogs of Ards. There is also a reference to a showing at a marriage of Ringdufferin by one Ballie as well as one McGiffert.
It is just figuring the connection..
This is going to be quite an accomplishment ... me with my two fingered typing methods and no speed reading skill. But then the boys are all grown up and we just replaced the rugs with laminated flooring so the housework is at a minimal. My hubby does all the cooking and seems to love it with all his new recipes from different areas of the world. Loves his many virisions of Chicken or chops.
He keeps wanting to show off his lamb recipes as he grew up on a large sheep farm in Northern Alberta where his father immigrated to in 1928.
But I have never had the taste for mutton. Maybe at sometime later.
Anyways I have learned more in this last three years of genealogy than my entire schooling ever taught me.
The cruelities that one group of people can place upon another in the name of family and stature and not ever have a smidgin of guilt. Makes one wish they could have a machine gun and a time machine. Things would be different then.. eh?
To me I assume that these McGiffords did indeed originate somewhere in the southern Ards around Ballyphilip and spread around the Lough.
I have traced one from Carnreaggh , Hillsborough area back to 176o and onwards to one John in Toronto. I have traced a Thomas McGiffert of Antrim all the way through Scotland and on to Winnipeg Manitoba where she is a MPP represenative for the last ten years or more...Dianne McGifford.
I have traced Arthur Cushman McGiffert from Ireland , Down to Ashtaboola Ohio where he was a Minister.
I have traced one James McGiffert from County Down , portaferry to Green Co Alabama where he had extensive holdings until the civil war broke the plantation and the slaves were all freed.

These akll originate in County Down Ireland and seem to get lost around the early 1800 or if one follows any grave inscription and trace the births then the mid 1700. I have nias yet found a McGifford into 1600. This leads me to beleive they did not come until very close to 1700. But then I could be wrong. I was once before...
I better close this disclosure but not the search.
Thanks again all for any help . Keep your eyes out for anything that may help.

don't worry red, our springs tend to come early and we've been known to have snow in May so we ain't out of the woods yet.
Its the NIFHS that have a branch meeting in the library first Monday (I think) of every month, Northern Ireland Family Historical Society of which John McGiffert was a founder member, they might be the ones to approach about getting the church records online, something to keep in mind for the not too distant future, maybe we can get Eddie and his cam on the job sometime if they permit it, we'll see, won't be immediate though, we both have projects lined up and waiting...

I will keep my eyes peeled
